I love Viola Davis but...

I love Viola, she is the lead actress in this film... She is in almost every scene that Denzel Washington is in, the campaigning process (Academy Award) is unfair. She's definitely not a supporting actress in this film ... just my 2 cents.

You're not wrong and I agree with you. But the reason they're campaigning for her as best supporting actress is because she has a better chance of winning than taking a shot at best actress. It's all about winning that little gold statue. Even if it means taking a demotion.

reply

I know why she did it, unfortunately it's not fair and she'll win an oscar from the strategic move that was made.

reply

She'll be up against Harris ( moonlight ) who was on film only 5-10 minutes .

reply

The true great supporting actresses this are Naomie Harris, Michelle Williams, Octavia Spencer etc.

Yeah, i've never understood the rules process that allows things like this to happen, and it seems to happen mostly with actresses too. I've never seen an actor nominee who didn't make the cut for main best actor category get a mulligan in the supporting category. Shouldn't be allowed.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

They did the same thing with Alicia Vikander last year in "The Danish Girl." She had equal screen time with Eddie Redmayne, yet they put her in the Supporting Actress category so she would have a chance at winning the award (she did). Had she been up for Best Actress, she had no shot at beating Brie Larson in "Room."

reply

Yeah, supporting actress always seems like a rigged category.

reply

I've always thought that Timothy Hutton completely carried the film Ordinary People, but only got supporting actor awards.....just sayin'....

reply

In my opinion she is lucky to be nominated for anything considering her performance in that movie.

"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."

Out of interest when did you have your brain out

Around the same time you learned to write a whole sentence.

"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."

Viola Davis and the studio are cheating and I sincerely hope she DOES NOT win the best supporting actress Oscar. And I don't want to here Viola Davis or any of her stupid fans complaining of RACISM if she does not win. Davis is committing category FRAUD. I am ashamed of the Oscar Committee allowing Viola Davis to cheat. But Davis better watch out Helen Hunt tried the same trick the Sessions a few years ago. Hunt was the female lead BUT she cheated like Davis and was put in the supporting category. Octavia Spencer won that year I think. I sincerely hope Viola Davis does not win. It says a lot about Davis that her studio did not BELIEVE in her acting talent was good enough. So they put her in the supporting category.

stevenmorrisseyx: The Academy's Board has never had any regulations forcing category placements. So there is actually nothing they can do to prevent category fraud. It is the producers and stars themselves who decide to campaign for Leading or Supporting. But then it is up to every individual voting member to decide in which category they will vote for their favorites. Remember Kate Kinslet the year she won for The Reader. She had two films: The Reader and Revolutionary Road. The producers decided to campaign her for Lead in Revolutionary Road and Support in The Reader. Well, the Academy voters didn't care about the campaign and nominated her only as Lead in The Reader. And then she won. In this case, Viola and the producers decided to go Supporting because she stood a better chance of winning. But don't doubt for a minute that she must have received many votes for Fences in the Lead category. She was actually running the risk of being left out altogether if she divided her votes too much.

I agree she is definetely NOT a supporting actress here but at the same time I'm glad she is not running against Ruth Negga for Best Actress because I for one would hate to choose between Negga and Davis. As it is the only Best Actress contender Negga has to worry about is Isabelle Huppert because all the others are also-rans. As for Davis she is a giant competing with pygmies in this category.

reply

She's wouldn't have won in either category... she's Lucky to be nominated at all considering her performance in that movie.

"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."

This kind of thing has been going on for years, it doesn't really mean anything. Look at "The Godfather", Pacino stars in that movie, he is in it far more than Brando and Pacino was nominated for Supporting Actor and didn't win, however Brando was nominated for Best Actor and won, it also happened with Timothy Hutton in Ordinary People, he was nominated and won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar when he really starred in that movie. There are probably a zillion more examples....nobody really understands.
