Denzel was amazing as usual but his character was total D*CK!

*SPOILERS BELOW*

Denzel was amazing as usual but his character was a total D*ck!

You really could not root for him or like him once you see how much of an A-hole he was or at least had a ton of bad karma and baggage.

From treating his son like crap, questionable financial exploitation of the man who saved his life in war, to hearing him brag about stabbing a guy to death who HE WAS ROBBING, to finding out he knocked up some side mistress. He just seemed like the most narcissistic piece of trash in the movie.

I actually felt bad for his wife, kid, bastard daughter, neighbors and first wife and son. You almost are happy for them at the end that he's no longer around?

Thoughts?

I agree with you, Denzel played the role well. Viola played her part too. Family hey! I loved the engaging dialogue in this movie it's quite rare these days. I love action, scifi and all that but watching Fences reminded me how much I enjoy dialogue and family drama.
It's my fave film so far this year.
Cheers!

I agree with you but I also thought he has his reasons. He was bitter because he grew up in a time when he wasn't even allowed to get a proper education much less exercise his god given talent on the baseball field. And all of that made his distrusting, so much so that he wanted to pass that on to his sons. No matter what they just couldn't convince him the world was changing. I thought it was a great character study.

Trying to create a channel based on interpreting, reviewing, and even giving you something to laugh about film. Hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.

I don't think he was bragging about stabbing a guy to death. He did say he regretted it. He was young and foolish. Not that that excuses what he did, but it is what it is.

Also, the man didn't save his life in the war. It was his brother and where did you get the part about saving his life?

Wasn't Denzel explaining that he took a metal plate in the head for him and thats why Denzel's still alive through the war or something like that?

I understood it as thats why Denzel and Viola were so nice to him despite him being super intrusive and creepy.

He fought in the war and got a metal plate in his head, yes.

But they were nice to him because he was his brother that's all.

The movie made it clear that Gabe was Troy's brother. At no point in the film did anyone say Troy was a veteran.

Stallone could of played that part but hollywood is obseesed with black face. Italians were poor too so were the chinese.

I agree. He was an asshole and the film made it seem like he was the anti-hero. He was drunk, racist and a philanderer and he got such an easy pass.
