I'm confused about the end

Spoilers.

I'm confused why she thought she could change the past by telling herself not to get caught, as they hadn't been able to do change the past with the photos before?

reply

Callie essentially lost her mind. She tried to trick Finn into thinking the photos changed, and afterward actually suggests that they're ability to change the past was his idea. She fooled herself.

reply

Callie was working with the daytime photos the whole time without the other characters or the audience being aware of it. We have no idea how many times her actions alone changed the outcome of the night time photo. I know the actual photo on the floor didn't change because she swapped them, but that's not to say her past self, the day before, wouldn't learn from the mistake of getting caught by the window, and then actually succeed in not getting caught. Since the warning sign falls at the end we don't know if it was going to actually work or not.

reply

The way i understand it is, at 8 am on Wednesday Callie takes the picture saying dont get caught by the window then at 8am Tuesday (the day before) she sees that because she is the only one that knows about the morning photos. So now she knows to not get caught therefore changing the "future". Which then throws in the problem with EVERY time travel/future seeing etc movie, if she successfully didn't get caught then why would she leave the note telling her not to get caught.

Mind blown.

That's exactly the mistake the girl makes: she CAN'T change de past. In the film, a photography is always a register of a moment, be it in the present or the future. It's just this, a register: it can't be altered. The paradox is they only did what they did because they've seen the photos, but the photos showed only what they were going to do nevertheless. The painter, for example, only copies a photo he sees of a painting he's *already* painted in the future. Had he not seen the photo, he could not paint it, but as he sees it, he paints, altough without inspiration in the moment of painting, but in the future! You don't mess up with the future, it can not be changed because it already happened!

The movie was pretty logical until we found out about the morning photos and little messages Callie was sending to herself. When she wrote "don't get caught by the window" I presumed she meant "don't get caught by the window during the evening picture" (which was the only picture that was important, as far as Finn and Jasper were concerned). She did have a 12 hour advantage and started scheming with this little secret of hers so much that she finally lost her marbles and started thinking that she can somehow change the past.

reply

She clearly meant don't get caught by Finn during the morning picture, and thus give away the secret of the 8am picture. But yes she thought she could somehow change something that has already happened - her getting caught by Finn. All the other stuff with gambling at the dog races never contradicted the pictures, so that went smoothly.

reply

Events can definitely be changed, since she "killed Jasper to save Finn", as instructed by the note she put up.

I thought the ending was satisfying, darkly amusing and ironic in the style of Hitchcock.
