Very very very good

Surprised at the critical reception, mostly because of those great quotes from reviews they used in the trailer (classic but still).

I never saw The Big Chill, so I'm kind of coming in without any preconceived ideas about what this is going to be or should be.

What I see here is a very good movie with a fantastic cast, I don't have much exposure to any of them really aside from Aubrey, I've only seen like one movie prior with Greenfield, Levy, Minghella, Parker & never saw Ritter before in anything.

I'd say the standouts are Nate Parker, Aubrey & Max Greenfield, the rest of them are quite good, especially Ritter. The characters are probably archetypes considering how much this seems to be similar to The Big Chill, but they still work really well, the most entertaining being Josh most definitely.

It has a big heart at the center of it, I don't feel it ever gets really preachy or pretentious, although Josh is precisely the one who's kind of the snob of the group, but that's clearly sort of a facade. It seems for me like it navigates the subject matter pretty well, and the last third is especially fantastic.

I find the writing overall to be very strong, so is the direction. It looks rather plain visually but it really doesn't matter here. All in all, a very pleasing movie to watch.

Give it a shot, and don't be cynical about it

The movie was very good indeed.

Agreed, it deserves some love.
The actors simply embraced their characters, they all seemed really comfortable in their skins. I can't remember a single scene where everything felt fake and unnatural. And it was nice to see Aubrey Plaza in a not grumpy role!
