So this is the Big Chill...

...updated for the 2010's and instead of dying Kevin Costner lived. Hope the music is good.

I was about to post this. It's pretty much the same movie. They didn't even bother changing Alex's name, except that he's not dead. There's no way there isn't any connection between the two films. Not peeved. Just surprised.

My immediate thoughts as well. Still, I'm interested to see what the director does with the story. The synopsis makes it sound as if the world of social media would make a major impact.

The story is very similar to The Big Chill, but that doesn't mean it's not a good movie. Last spring while working at an management firm I got to read About Alex, which was called Seven Years Three Days at the time, for one of their clients (who is not in the film) and it was one of the few scripts that still stands out to me a year later. I've been keeping tabs on this movie since reading it - it basically is The Big Chill, but updated and with some great young actors, in my opinion anyway. And let's face it: the majority of people under 30 probably have no idea what The Big Chill is. I'm 23 and working in the industry and I hadn't even heard of it until my mom randomly turned it on TV a few years ago.

Like everyone else, I was going to say the same thing. I just saw Max Greenfield on Live with Kelly and Michael and thought he was giving a synopsis of the Big Chill.

I LOVE 'The Big Chill', so I'm pretty annoyed with this movie already, having only seen the trailer. I especially hate that they couldn't even dress it up as something else. Social media alone does not refresh an already-existing movie. I doubt 'About Alex' will contain the same weightiness, dignity and grace that 'The Big Chill' has.

darn. i was going to come and post that it looks like the terminator.

oh wait....

I really like movies like this. Hopefully it will have some good drama as well as coemdy.

reply

Yup, it's The Big Chill for the millenial generation, a generation so self absorbed and pathetic they can't even get suicide right.

I'm so ugly...that's ok 'cause so are you.

reply

lol i came here to post this and everybody beat me too it.

reply

Then again, The Big Chill was just a rehash of The Return of the Secaucus Seven, but with bigger name actors.

reply

According to an above post, this was the original title of 'Alex': 'Seven Years Three Days'-even more plagiarism!

'What is an Oprah?'-Teal'c.

First thing I thought as well....its an updated version of The Big Chill.....I guess this is what they mean when it's said that Hollywood is bankrupt of ideas. Maybe if you weren't old enough to see or remember The Big Chill, you'd think this movie was an original idea, but for those of us around in the 80's we noticed this for what it is - a Big Chill reboot.

Aside from a really good soundtrack, there wasn't really much else that great about the Big Chill.
So now they're doing it again, wonder what tunes they'll select since most of the popular music for the post-2000 college grads has been crap.

If your dog could talk he'd say "Can I smell your butt?"

There we go. TBC is just a mediocre movie with lots of implausibilities and smaltzy sentimentalism (and 1st world "problems"). It's not like making another version is tarnishing a classic or anything...it's just a remake of a so-so movie, nothing to get upset about.

That's what I thought when I read the synopsis.
