Hardly resembles the book/movie

i like the show but ive noticed, theres hardly any of the plot of the book in the story, for example Fiona is basically a different character, in the book/film she was suffering from depression and her suicide attempt and marcus looking after her was a big part of the story.

No. But I appreciate that they've made the show its own thing. The movie couldn't be replicated; not on an American network.

Stop! Manners time.

That wouldn't play well in a light hearted sitcom. Not unless the character was used much much less than she is here. Something a little darker in the comedy from the UK maybe, they are quit good at that. But no way over here unless the depressed suicidal character was silly for cheap laughs.

I loved the original movie but this show really has little in common. The starting point and premise and that's about it. Certainly not as good, but ok enough on it's own at times. Some things done well in 90 a minute movie would be tedious and repetitive in a series pretty quick so changes are naturally needed. Even as it is, the hippie sheltered lifestyle is getting old for material

Well the pilot had a similar plot, and the change of Fiona was probably the best change they made. The book/film's Fiona was like a hippie but suffers from depression and suicide, this Fiona is also a hippie but takes the happy-go-lucky nature of a hippie. So they have similarities but chose the much better option for a sitcom. The basic character types are the same, they just changed some of the motivations (like Marcus wanting a better care-giver) to fit an on-going sitcom. It was a good change.
