Joe is a million times better than Adam!

I, for one, am glad Bonnie cheated on that schmuck with the hunky Joe 

Adam isnt really the boyfriend bonnie needs.

I never really understood why she would be with someone who clearly needs alcohol and weed to have fun. Maybe she's strong, but why put yourself in that situation every day. Seems like Joe is going to be a jerk tho. Didn't she say he hadn't returned texts or called. I will be surprised if he's around again.

Maybe poker's just not your game, Ike. I know, let's have a spelling contest.

I think for Bonnie, being with an active alcoholic is empowering in a dysfunctional way. She doesn't feel she's succeeded much in life, so her sobriety, when she has it, is a major accomplishment. That's why she enabled Adam to drink and smoke weed. As long as he was using that stuff she could feel superior.

There are many possible reasons, and none of them are functional. The assessment by Marjaorie was the kindest possible, suggesting that Bonnie was vicariously looking for the thrills she missed since there was less drama in her current life. But IMHO, based on women that I've known in recovery, and from the fact that this show is written pretty accurately, Bonnie is someone who is so damaged that she is incapable of trust, hence her complete absence of any healthy boundaries. Bonnie isn't in recovery, she is just between drinks, as are probably half the people at any given meeting. She has a deep-rooted belief that she is going to fail at some point, which of course will be all the more difficult were she to actually put effort into her recovery. To me, she is at most at step 2, as she has never made the decision required in step 3, which most people don't do because then there is no barrier between them and having to do step 4. They seem to have a mentality that not trying and likely failing is better than trying and still possibly failing. Someone serious about recovery would do pretty much everything opposite to how Bonnie does it. The very acts of her "proving" she can be around alcohol is the same proof that she hasn't yet admitted her powerlessness to herself, sort of like the man with outward bravado who inwardly is scared and insecure. So Bonnie is always placing herself in jackpot situations because then when she relapses, she can blame the situation and not herself for putting herself there in the first place. She always has an explanation, as if it were already rehearsed, to function as an excuse for why A lead to B and how none of it is her fault. Her inability to accept responsibility on any level is what makes her character dramatically interesting to many, but will ultimately, unless it changes, lead to to her relapse and downfall. It could even go so far down as a DUI crash with Roscoe in the car.
