It didn't really work for me either. I felt the movie was over-dramatic. So typical of Korean movies, they take a common genre and amp it up to 150%. It works well for action movies, not so well for sappy dramas.

Unfortunately, the most interesting concepts in the movie were hardly touched (like the fact that the daughter seemed better off with the warden and his wife for a decent upbringing) and instead relied on overacting/overdrama too much to force us to care about the relationships between her and her father.

This movie, like most movies about parents and children, probably have more effect on viewers who are parents themselves. Since I don't have kids, it didn't really affect me in that way.

Hmmm..... I couldn't disagree more. I went into this with low expectations and was a little put off until I understood the main character.

I actually liked a lot of the characters as the story unfolded. It illustrated that many different "types" of people can shed their differences and be quite unified for an undeniably good cause.

I agree with your points, for me this movie is nothing but a cheesy melodrama. First of all, there is nothing in the story that made me believe that everything happening in this movie is appropriate. I think the director tried too hard showing the emotional bond between the father and daughter that he neglected the flaws. Some scenes became so cheesy that i had to skip them and then there is the climax of the movie,the whole "escape using balloon" plan may be the dumbest idea ever. And i would've liked this movie more if they hadn't killed the father but in the end he died for the crimes he didn't even commit. So what was the purpose of the trial, yeah the charges pinned on him were dropped but it all happened after the damage is done. Its not like i didn't like melodrama, i've seen many emotional movies like grave of the fireflies oasis etc, but those movies are well made and better executed. Finally i don't call this movie trash because it is not, but this movie is not a great movie either. For me its just like battle royal, mediocre and overrated.
