the gay kid

Why does every gay kid on tv have to be some flaming princess. I knew gay guys growing up and they were a little off but they were not dancing like Shakira.

reply

Same reason there has to be an Archie Bunker type, and every kid on TV has the same bowl haircut that no child in real life has had since the 1970s.

Because most TV writers are hacks who rely on stereotypes in the hope that the morons who watch shows like this don't have to think too hard.

reply

What bowl haircuts? lol

reply

Its supposed to be funny. I know that it is kind of offensive but it is meant to come off as funny, I found the mother hilarious with her portrayal though. I think that if you try not to be PC it is funny. I mean if you watched Modern Family tonight they made fun of Asians being smart and liking school but no one will be complaining about that...

reply

I have no problem with it but the truth is the other kids would be busting the little fruits chops

reply

I think they are still to young to know what sexuality actually is but its only the first episode lets hope they don't milk it with him being gay.

reply

they would see him as a girly weirdo

reply

I think that if you try not to be PC it is funny.

So you'd have no problem with the black kid shuckin' an' jiving'?

The audience is expected to laugh at, not with, the effeminate kid. That's why it's not funny.

reply

The problem is that is what is perceived as funny. However the bigger problem is your probably white or at least not black. It's more funny how the minority usually does not take offence to these things but people with "White Guilt" do. Such as how people were throwing a hissy fit over Devious Maids being about Mexican/ Latina woman. I myself am Mexican and took no offence to this. Most latino/latina people did not take offence to this but white people shuddered at the idea of Mexicans working as maids but have no problem with hiring an immigrant as a maid or worker of some sort.

Having to be politically correct can be just as offensive if not hypocritical. The Jefferson's lasted 11 years and was written for an African American audience but was created and written by white people. I never read anyone taking offence to it...

reply

Yes, I am white. Ignoring you're subtle bigotry towards non-minorities, I'm also gay. And tired of seeing straight people--of all colours--using the effeminate gay man as a punch line.

As for the Jeffersons, a black man playing a street smart self-made business man was hardly a Step n' Fetchet character. Perhaps if you go back to the 1970's you will see how offended black Americans were at seeing George Jefferson on TV. The educated ones, that is. The people who aspiring to be like George Jefferson loved the character.

reply

I'm bisexual but the problem is what would even be on TV if we were going to be politically correct. The fact of the matter is if you are not offending someone in some way then it probably won't be funny. Is it right? No... But unfortunately there is no way out of it.

reply

Seinfeld was offensive? MASH was offensive? Golden Girls was offensive? The Jack Benny Show was offensive? Carol Burnett Show was offensive? The Mary Tyler Moore Show was offensive?

You need to re-think your theory.

reply

Seinfeld was offensive? ???

Ask the many Puerto Ricans who boycotted the show.... People complained when they let the Young lady go rolling down the hill in a bad wheel chair.
MASH was offensive?.

.. a black charecter named Spear Chucker??
Golden Girls was offensive?

The Jack Benny Show was offensive... Rochester's Yas sir Mistah Benny???

These were offensive to many... not to me now mind you, I take a comedy as just that comedy. There have been many jokes that were aimed at my Race, religion, Regional Heritage, but they are jokes, some funny, some not. But never was I offended by them. But yes most comedy offends some people.

Considering how often Seinfeld had Puerto Rican and Mexican actors on the show, I find their anger misguided. It's not like they hired Andrew Sachs to play characters.

I searched for complaints about the wheel chair episode, but can't find anything.

.. a black charecter named Spear Chucker??

Played by a black actor, paying a character who was a thoracic surgeon, saving lives. What I found offense about Spearchucker Jones was that the show dropped him after one season.

You're grabbing at straws with that one.

You haven't done a good job of proving your argument. Until then, it's just your opinion; for whatever that's worth.

reply

Is he really gay in the show? He's flamboyant and it's funny. His mom comes to the conclusion that he's gay... but there are many straight guys who are effeminate. Don't take it so personal... like "It's offensive to me that HOLLYWOOD would ONCE AGAIN portray a GAY MAN(SUCHASMYSELF) as being WOMANLY." Just be who you are, don't let TV shows or movies get in your mind too much....

reply

He's flamboyant and it's funny.

Why is it funny? I'll ask once again--if the black kid was a Step n Fetchet character would that be funny? Or even acceptable in this day and age? Why do people--usually straight--love to laugh at, and not with, effeminate male characters?

like "It's offensive to me that STRAIGHT HOLLYWOOD would ONCE AGAIN portray a GAY STEREOTYPE as A GAY MINSTEL to amuse straight audiences."

There, fixed it for you.

Just be who you are, don't let TV shows or movies get in your mind too much....

I'd prefer not to let TV shows, or movies ridicule gay people, as it has been doing for decades. Openly gay actors have to put up abuse, and discrimination daily, and then watch as those same straight people who abuse, and ridicule them, hire straight actors for gay roles, and abuse the few out gay actors on set:

LOL I'm reading your post in a feminine voice. It's funny actually. Seriously though, I'm gay and I don't and won't things personal. My boyfriend and I are not anything like Mitch and Cam from Modern Family... but that doesn't mean the characters aren't funny. It's funny to laugh at and with... It's funny because it's DRAMATIC OVER THE TOP OMG whatever. If someone falls down the stairs in a sitcom, I'm laughing at them... if they're laughing, I'm laughing with them.

I don't know who Step n Fetchet is. Will and Grace is hilarious though. I tried to read the link you sent but it just sounded a lot like situations for gays and minority races all over the job industry. It sucks it's stupid what are you gonna do. Get your panties unraveled and smoke a bowl or something.

Quite the opposite. The fact that this show, MODERN FAMILY and so many other shows nowadays feel the necessity to include gays in their casts is the working definition of PC.

In fact it would be unPC if they *didn't* do it.

reply

It's funny that's why. Like another poster wrote, if we are going to be PC about everything there would not be any good comedies on the air. If something offends you just change the channel.

i dont get why they do it either - im guessing he ends up the best player just to show people that gays can do sports.

at least he isnt ugly betty kid gay - that kid was too much to the point i stopped watching.

reply

I suppose everyone has their own version of funny and I'm not being PC and the kid didn't offend me, but he was just not funny. Quite irritating in fact. None of the kids are funny really, but this guy was the worst.

The show is okay, but isn't laugh out loud funny, at least to me.

reply

Because the show is about being NOT politically correct.

The sissification of America is way out of control. That's why kids today are soft.

reply

Did they actually mention that he is gay?
