Time Period?

I watched this, and I'm confused as to what the time period was. The events which this film is based on took place in the early 1980s. Indeed, the entire story is strictly appropriate to the 1980s. There is a mention of Strom Thurmond, who's been dead for well over a decade.

But, the costume design appears to be modern. There's a scene where Toby is wearing a svelte V-neck T-shirt. I'm positive those weren't around in the 1980s. Cars are always a great way to tell what the time period is supposed to be in a film, but I can't recall a scene with any cars.

The costume design is very poorly considered. In fact, the entire film is pretty trite, considering how many extremely similar films have come along in resent years.

Less than 5 minutes in there is a scene with multiple cars visible. The opening scene starts with him in a car I believe. Did you not see the beginning? The cars did look relatively appropriate for the 80's. Although as a self-described film buff, I'm a stickler for authenticity in wardrobe and hair. The wardrobe dept definitely dropped the ball quite a few times. And the hair! SO MANY hairstyles were obvious that people were NOT wearing back then. It isn't that difficult to do research on what people wore or how their hair was in a certain time period, so I'm not sure why so many films drop the ball with this. It doesn't ruin a film for me, but it's difficult to take the producer(s) and director (s) seriously when they can't even figure out what was relevant at the time.
