It's just very unexpected considering that this is a sequel to a film done in Mandarin...
I haven't seen the Genghis Khan series, but I'm assuming each part used the same main language.
Imagine if they decided that the second Lord of the Rings film should have the actors/actresses speaking another language... Mandarin, how about? I almost hesitated to say Mandarin, because how ridiculous would that be considering the setting and white cast. But that's exactly how the Sword of Destiny feels - ridiculous - because the setting is in 19th century China with an asian cast. Michelle Yeoh speaks English very well, but seeing her speaking so differently from the last time she played the role will be distracting.
For me, personally, I wanted to take my mother to see this since Mandarin is one of her first languages, and she really enjoyed the original film. I was excited to take her to see this sequel in theatres... but if it's English, she won't easily understand everything. I would rather wait for an internet download with Chinese subtitles.
If this was it's own film, then "fine". I wouldn't complain as much... but as a sequel to such a widely acclaimed epic, English was a strange decision.
You haven't seen Genghis Kahn but they did a really good job. It's in English but a very good show and it wasn't weird.
They will make a Chinese version I'm sure in mandarin but having it in English is going to really make this movie big. As long as the English doesn't sound stupid I'm sure they will do a really good job.
To give another example, they had a big TV show called Vikings and this was in English, not in Swedish or whatever, and it was very well received.
I saw it in Chinese and it was pretty good with the Chinese audio. It sounds way more poetic and helped it to stay truer to the original. Was thanking God that they did not have that techno soundtrack that was used in the trailer. It was fun but isn't going to win any oscars and lacked the emotional weight of the original. I'm just thankful it wasn't the disaster that it could have been. Michelle Yeoh carried the movie.
What do you guys have against people speaking English in an Asian setting? Jason,Michelle and the rest of the cast were great and their English was fine.
