What is "The Good Lie"

What does the title refer to?

It is spoken of in the scene in the classroom with Mamere. A Mark Twain story is being discussed. Also, in a later scene with Mamere and Theo. at the airport

Can you fly this plane?
Surely you can't be serious.
I am serious,and don't call me Shirley

reply

Thanks. If someone wants to, can supply how it's applied here (what "good lie" is used) - I'll take the spoiler. But, that's helpful.

I was hesitant on giving it away. Go see the Movie.

Bruce, I find it... condescending when someone makes the spoiler decision for someone else who's already made the decision for themselves. (As for spoiling the story for a third party, that's what the "blackout" spoiler tags stop--if you use them.) But if you don't want to give someone the help they ask for, then just shut up about it. Don't tell them (twice) that you're not going to tell them, and that they should see the movie instead.

BTW, there are some movies that I'm on the fence about seeing, and I won't see *unless* someone spoils them for me first. Don't assume that your personal approach always applies for everyone.

I'm just wondering, are you generally referred to as the village idiot? Or were you busy texting during the times that phrase was mentioned?

When Mamere is taking a class, the book Huckleberry Finn is being discussed. In response to the teacher's question, he makes an astute analysis that Huck lies (about runaway slaves) because he cares more about Jim than about the reward money and therefore lying, normally a bad thing, can be a good thing. Huck saves Jim with a "good lie."

Mamere later does the same--saving Theo by passing his brother off as himself. I've seen his sacrifice diminished and criticized on this board as "immigration fraud," by people who obviously missed the point--and the title--of the movie.
