Bullet counting (spoilers)

In the scene where the brothers are ambushing Greider, and losing big time, in a last ditch effort one of the Brenners says something to the effect of "we have 4 shots between us...he has two". Basically saying lets bum-rush him. Of course this does not go well, as Greider gets off many more shots then 2. I'm no gun expert, but my question here is: was Greider just a fast loader? Was his rifle/shotgun modified to hold more than the assumed 2 shots? Have these guys been up in the mountains too long to not know that he had more shots than 2 at that time with that gun? Not a big deal - I loved the movie. Was just curious of the significance there or what was being implied / revealed if anything?

reply

Greider was armed with a Winchester repeating rifle, an American rifle that held about 10 cartridges in a tubular magazine under the barrel; think of it as the 19th Century version of an assault rifle. The Brenners were armed with double barreled shotguns and single shot breech loading rifles and being rustic Europeans were evidently unaware of Winchester rifles.

When he took the girl away, he told her to take the gun of the man in the wagon. Later he told her to give it to him. So, he had two weapons, a shotgun and a Winchester repeating rifle.

Before the Winchester there was the Spencer Repeating rifle used by the Union in the Civil War. It could pump out up to 20 rounds per minute with reloading. The company was later sold twice. The last time to Winchester. War Surplus Spencer's were then sold to France and used in the Franco-Prussian War,

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

No, he had only one rifle - a Winchester. The rifle the girl took off the man in the wagon was given to her father. This is the rifle that Lucas later shoots the blacksmith with.

The europeans were not aware of the Winchester and how many rounds it had in its magazine. They thought the maximum shots were two, as in a double barreled shotgun.

Yes that was awesome seeing the look on the lead Brenner boy's face when he got shot with that "third" bullet and laying there calculating how on earth did I miscount things! lol
Ignorance of modern American weaponry got that hillbilly killed.

Are they still hillbillies if they live in the Alps? Can they be Alpbillies?

reply

No, I think they'd be hillwilhelms. Anyhoo irishtom29 has the answer. Recall that Luzi asked if the rifle was from America, and Greider said yes. They assumed it had 2 shots.
