Never heard of one being used by photographers. Perhaps a calming device?

Could be, or just a timer. Count along with it - the exposure times were close to 20 seconds.

Much thanks. Makes sense to know how long to hold still while the lens is open.

Followup: of course, it probably has all kinds of symbolism, too, but I wouldn't know what.
