Why do the pupils in Joe Sellers' class whisper/shout "Salty" and why does Sellers react in such an agressive way? I know that salt in French is sel (SELlers?), but that does not make any sense to me. Can anyone explain the twist in this scene?

With the way the students were chanting, the word is an insult no matter what the exact meaning is. His students have probably been teasing and calling him that for the 30 years he has been teaching. After catching his girlfriend with his former student that morning, he finally lost it.
