The pub where Will sees Liam in the toilets (Liam is on some kind of hiking/climbing holiday with his mates). Turns out it's not in Scotland at all.

It's this place, in Chorleywood, Hertfordshire.

About as far removed from Scotland as it gets!

When I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you!

Also the whole Berwick, Carlisle, Kielder thing was weird, they are so far away from each other. Also Kielder is in England.

of course Chorleywood community hall cropped up earlier with the Liam at home scenes in episode 2, but it was a slightly lazy attempt at a pub in the Scottish borders- even if it was on the English side, didn't have the right feel.

Also did a double take at the Berwick-Upon-Tweed "train station." I was just there not long ago, and don't think it looked like that. The view from the roundabout is wrong, I think (what they showed of it). It's more built up than that as I recall.

Oh well. Needs must. Probably cheaper to have a sign printed up to slap on a building, then location shoot a few hundred miles from London.

Looking at Streetview, there is a roundabout but it doesn't look right. However the red sandstone suggests it's oop north rather than near London. Since they filmed outdoor scenes in Edinburgh for episode 3 I guess it's one of the Lothian suburban stations with a Berwick sign. I don't know about up there but certainly down south you'd see more evidence of train company branding.

Since they filmed outdoor scenes in Edinburgh
Thanks for letting me know my guess was correct.

I've never been there, but I have read all of Ian Rankin's books and he describes the city so vividly that I thought, "That's GOT to be Edinburgh".

Pub had a saltire hanging from an upstairs window, but if nothing else the grass was all wrong for that far north.

The death has to happen in Scotland, so that you can get a "not proven" verdict.

reply

What struck me as odd was Will's asking the publican if he could use the loo! Never happens in any pub I've ever been in.

reply

Maybe it was plausible that he would ask, since he wasn't buying anything. Of course it was really to establish the supposedly accidental nature of his seeing Foyle.

Well, it was bloody cold and damp in Edinburgh and Glasgow the JULY I was there, so it's probably pretty miserable in the winter. After all, they were filming in February and March!

I can fully understand why they'd use locations around southern England to stand in for Scotland even if it meant that the landscape and scenery didn't quite match up!
