Appalling, and that's being kind!

Way back in the days of Saturday Night Live, Ben Elton was funny, and I mean really funny. Some thirty-odd years later though, that's all changed. This is just shocking. David Haig is just doing David Haig from everything thing else he's done since Four Weddings.

If I carry on, it'll sound like I spent too long watching this. In reality, only got five minutes in and that was too much. Don't bother with this and lose 30 minutes of your life you'll never get back on something else instead - like the toilet!

Haig does not seem too different from his character in The Thin Blue Line. Its a traditional sit com from the once edgy Elton!

Its that man again!!

I tried this for aboyut 10 minutes and couldn't believe my ears! Over acted, dated, unfunny, streotypical - I won't go on - you get the gist!

reply

Shame, Elton used to top of his game.
I also only managed 5 minutes and then decided life is top precious to waste.
No option for 0 stars, so went with 1.

I managed about 15 minutes - utterly wretched.

Looks bobbins.

I didn't think it was too bad. David Haig's character is brilliant. I love his rants. Very much like Inspector Grim from Elton's other sitcom The Thin Blue Line.

Not so keen on the supporting actors and their character as of yet as they really do seem to be over acted. But I think that that is generally the style of the comedy. I think I initially felt the same about the Thin Blue Line. But thats a comedy I now love.

Lets give it a chance. I think the first episodes best moments came in the second half. On most forums it appears that most viewers/critics only reached the 15 minute stage, hardly enough to give a true reflection of the programme.

Cannot wait for the next episode.

... to write and act comedy!

This is gut-wrenchingly poor TV and should be hidden away on BBC Five (and yes, I'm aware we've only got BBCs One to Four!).

This is The Thin Blue Line (complete with 2 of the cast) supplanted to a domestic setting, and that was never funny in the first place. Luke Gell (who was one of the poorest characters in !Two Pints...") presumably got the role because James Dreyfus (from The Thin Blue Line) wasn't available (washing his hair?). Not that it makes a difference as they are both insufferable.

Even continuity was bad, with the scarf in the "Girl Shack" shop switching from folded in one position on the counter to unfolded in another position, back and forth between shots.

Ben Elton hasn't written anything good since Blackadder Goes Forth and shows no sign of changing that sad situation.

Somehow, through a superhuman effort of will and by spreading it across three nights, I managed nearly nine minutes...

"Security - release the badgers."

I enjoyed it all and am looking forward to tonights episode.

I thought it was funny in a Thin Blue Line way.

I have to say though that the huge tits kept me glued (not literally, yet) to the screen. I couldn't take my eyes off them. WOW !

Almost managed to watch a full minute tonight. It's like staring at the Sun though... Just stupid, I hope I didn't do myself any permanent harm.

reply

It wasn't that bad. After reading all the "reviews" I was expecting the worst but I managed to sit through the whole 1st episode and even chuckled a few times.

But, everything seemed to be rushed and not thought through. You can see a lot of Ben Elton lines from the 1980's (the blow hand dryer, etc.). Let's hope it picks up as time progresses.

I watched 10 minutes of it tonight and found it difficult to comprehend that this was written by the same person that gave us Blackadder and The Young Ones.
If I may paraphrase Vyvyan from said series, No! No! NO! We're not watching the bloody Wright Way! Bloody bloody bloody! I hate it! It's so bloody nice! Joanne "Treacle" Matthews and David "Sugar-Flavored-Snot" Haig! They're just a couple of reactionary stereotypes, confirming the myth that everyone in Britain is a lovable, middle-class eccentric - and I - HATE - THEM!
