Soft reboot?

I'm seeing articles suggesting that Fox is quietly calling this season a "soft reboot" which essentially means taking some of the old canon but not all of it and reworking how the show is done, including it's mythos.

They should have just let it die at the end of season 3 (or earlier) and this new show could start from scratch not attempt to be a fourth season...
