Maybe I missed something....(poss spoilers)

but what did the other missing families have to do with the plot line? I understood the main family's story, but if all the other families disappeared...where did THEY go?

Aah, I had that question as well--what about the other families? When the priest/Mario was looking through the old articles, I thought I saw that another family ended up dying in a similar fashion, and that the Mason (who built the house or whatever) and his family just disappeared. I cannot remember if that's right, but I'm assuming that the house itself had something to do with it and they are also stuck in different timelines…maybe? 

I'm with you. I think the movie had too many red herrings and was trying to be too clever with the plot. Honestly, I think they overdid it and painted themselves in a corner.

They're in the future, assuming the subtitles I found were correct:

The families and masons who formerly lived in this house appeared in the future.
They now live in a time where they don't belong.

What I want to know is how the heck old Leo would even know that???

Maybe he's from where they are, or has jumped ahead to their time and come back.

They are in the future, and they are in the plot because that is how Leo knows his mother can pull his 12-year old self into her timeline.
