Really good film, really hard to empathize with the mother. (Spoilers)

She lies to Juan about everything, uses him to raise a child that isn't even his, and criticizes his best efforts to provide for the family mercilessly ... then decides to leave him as old man with no explanation and take the children.

Dad was understandable in a "temporary insanity" way, especially given the death of his son, his financial failures, the end of his marriage, the discovery of his wife's infidelity and lies, and that the other man's son is the same person that killed his only child. He had to be stopped, but I felt bad for him.

I felt bad for both children, for various reasons.

The mother, however, held a story resolution that was fairly just, in my opinion. Meaning she did better than all three other members of her family.

The 1981 version of the mom couldn't even be nice to Juan for 2 minutes when he confronted her about the affair. She slapped him in the face! No wonder Juan lost it. He was a very sympathetic character.
