What was Greta's motive?

I saw this today and liked it, although I couldn't figure out the motive for Greta's actions in her kidnapping of these girls and locking them in a box. Was she locked in a box as a child in Hungary?

I guess she was just crazy. Too bad it's not explained.

Insanity.

She wants to posses youth, beauty, and destroy it. It's sick, but that was her M.O.

kawaiikiki, you are absolutely right. I read an interview with Isabelle Huppert where she said the main reason she did this film, besides respecting Neal Jordan, was that she always wanted to play a full-out murdering maniac, and this movie kind of "scratched that itch" for her. She even said that the character really isn't ever explained any more than that and that was OK with her. She said it's just a crazy psychopath, no more and no less. I love Isabelle Huppert but I didn't enjoy this movie that much precisely for that reason (though I did enjoy the sets and her Lagerfeld outfits.)
