A likeable little film

Very gentle and perhaps a tad too long... The sex scene felt a bit out of place and I'm sure Matthias Schoenaerts' all-over tan was very anachronistic. But, Winslet and Schoenaerts are likeable leads and Stanley Tucci is, as always, fab and not in it anywhere near enough... Visually, it's absolutely delicious and, on the whole, I really rather liked it.

I liked it, too. The music and cinematography were beautiful. I didn't notice Schoenaerts' all-over tan, but I probably assumed it was due to his outdoor job, though not sure why he'd be gardening naked! I particularly enjoyed the scenes between Rickman and Winslet. Tucci and his petulant boyfriend were very funny.

the sex scene was not graphic at all and no nudity for Kate, right?

i went to see INCEPTION 5 times... !!!

No - it wasn't graphic... I wouldn't want to suggest I have anything against sex scenes when they're appropriate... In fact, I'd say a lot of sex scenes are unrealistically coy, with the actors constantly ensuring certain body parts are covered by sheets or whatever. But, if a film's set up a particular mood, a sex scene doesn't necessarily fit in with that mood... By all means, let us know that characters have had or are going to have sex. But, there are plenty of ways you can do that... The otherwise excellent French film "Populaire" is another film where the sex scene was out of place... They'd created the atmosphere of one of those American romantic comedies from the '50s or early '60s. So, while that sex scene wasn't graphic either, it felt massively out of place.

I agree, OP. Visually beautiful, excellent acting. It's not going to make my list of favorite period dramas, as I found it overlong and too slow, but I quite enjoyed it. The ending scene is fabulous. The visuals and music are perfect! I especially love the shot of Rickman playing the Sun King standing still in the middle as the court dances around him as he beams in satisfaction. Very lovely.

Well, here's the second draft, dear: http://ahtp.nerim.net/A%20Little%20Chaos.pdf

I believe this is the earliest drat before Rickman revised it, though.

I thought it was absolutely awful. I'm a fan of period films and this is one of the worst I've seen in ages. I hate films that seem to go nowhere, like the terrible overrated Mallick films. This was just like one of his ***tfests. A worthless, meandering mess of a film with the pacing of watching paint dry.
