What an awful design. The sound of the water would completely drown out the sound of the distant string instruments. Plus it was just ugly. Ugh...

The rest of the film was just dull.

The website only mentions le Nôtre. There's no mention of Mme de Barra. Was she an actual person?

And all the pieces matter (The Wire)

My own impression is Le Nôtre was a real royal landscaper but Sabine is a fictional character created for the drama and the love story that this movie is about.

I agree! The way Kate was moving plants around during the movie, I expected the garden she was working on to have flowers in it. And it's nothing but tiered water falls with either grass or some kind of ground cover.

What's so special about it?!

I wouldn't describe it as ugly, but it was not spectacular in the way I expected. It seemed too ordered. When the camera pans away and above for the final scene I appreciated that this part of the gardens was very different.
