Winslet seems too old for the part, doesn't she?
...i just saw a trailer for this yesterday, and that was all i could think watching it.

What exactly in the trailer or in the storyline suggests that the part should be played by a younger actreess?
shareIn the trailer it seems like this is a movie where a young, out of her element woman comes to court and completely flips it on its ear with how 'different' she is.
"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
Well, again. It's you who added the "young" element. Actually, Alison Deegan, the screenplay writer, said she created the story thinking of a woman around her 40s, so...
shareUm, the trailer features Kate Winslet in the main role, based on a book. How does the trailer "seem" to be anything other than what it presents? And of course a person in her/his forties can be introduced to a new situation, in this case creating a garden for the king, and be out of their element. That's just life. You seem to know nothing about the film (and it does not sound as though you've even bothered to watch it before posting your "compelling" post about Kate Winslet). You also appear to be unfamiliar, entirely, with its source.
Kate's character is a woman with considerable experience creating beautiful, complex gardens -- enough experience and practical ability to be hired to engineer this new project for the Sun King himself. She also isn't "coming to court" -- that happens accidentally as she does not occupy a social position that would permit her to be involved in the court of Louis XIV. She needs to have enough experience of a complicated enterprise, and she needs to have a solid knowledge of the landscaping -- which types of plants will go where, how the plumbing for the water display will be integrated into the flora. So, no, a "young" woman would be totally wrong for this character and this story.
"Hearts and kidneys are tinker toys! I am talking about the central nervous system!"
Yes, because an accomplished female garden designer and landscaper in 17th century France would have been in her early 20s. Why didn't Hollywood think of that? Kate was 38 when this movie was filmed. Her age is perfect. Stfu.
shareI'm just home from seeing this tonight, here in Australia.
I thought Kate fit the role well. Most of the others, in fact, seemed out of their element. Alan Rickman, sadly, seemed tired and distracted (as he probably was, from his director's duties) and generally uninspired.
The trailer puts far too much emphasis on the suggestion of her influence at court. It's a momentary and lightly charming sequence, nothing more, and again sadly, one of the few times the film gets interesting.
You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Do you feel bad for writing that now that he is gone ? You should.
I pointed out your own "snarkery" and embarrassed you and now you are defensive. Typical response.
When I was in grade school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down HAPPY.

As an actress, she's just 2 years older of her screen-partner Matthias so I don't see how she could be 'too old'. She's 39 or 40, not 60 ... a male actor of the same age would be considered 'young'.
As for the character, I don't think she is the wrong age either, I mean she's supposed to be an 'unconventional' woman, a grown up woman, a builder... she can't be in her 20s. Also, she has an affair with a married man(whose wife is clearly older than him too.. so that's maybe just the man's taste not to chase young girls but grown up women with a strong personality)
This is not Cate Blanchett who is too old, I find her perfect. It's the actor who plays Le Notre who is too young. At the beginning of the construction of the Bosquet des Rocailles, Le Notre was in his late sixties. A more aged actor with more charisma, experience and charm would have been more credible.
English is not my language, so be gentle
What about Alan Rickman who portrays a King of 44, in his prime, at the age of ?? He was the most seriously miscast of the lot.
shareI agree that Alan Rickman was the one who was miscast. He gave a flat uninspired performance. The only remotely interesting actor in this disappointing movie is Kate Winslet.
:)
shareKate Winslet?
As a renaissance chick, I paint, write, and sing loudly off-key.
I saw this last night at an event, and Alan Rickman was interviewed afterward. This character has to be at least Kate Winslet's age for the story to make sense. Rickman originally wanted to make this movie a few years ago, and she was too young. He felt fortunate that she wanted to be part of the project now, when her age better fit the role.
sharehow was the movie and winslet's performance
shareA sophisticated landscape designer? No, definitely not too old. You, just like the rest of the world, are use to seeing too-young actresses in adult roles. Don't worry, your eyes will adjust to the ageless beauty of Kate Winslet once you watch the film.
