Bad Script and Just Plain Bad (SPOILERS)

I watched this tonight and almost quit more than once. The script was awful and the characters were stupid and very bland.

We don't get to know the characters at all, so there was just this feeling of who cares what happens to them. And some of it was so bad, script wise, that many scenes were unintentionally funny.

It could have been good in the hands of the right director and script writer, instead it was a bad mess.

There were glaringly obvious mistakes. One character got infected and repeatedly bashed her head on the steering wheel enough times to do serious damage, yet her face, head and nose were perfectly fine. Just like the male lead sustained tons of different injuries to the point of being stupidly funny, yet, he's still going strong.

The dialogue, what there was of it, mainly consisted of screaming each other's names and "Help me close the door!"

There was an attempt to make this different. The infection came from well water poisoned with a homemade drug and fungus combo. But it wears off after an hour or so.

The only good thing was the ending, but it wasn't enough to save this movie. They really should have started the movie with that ending. What a shame they didn't.

I gave this movie two stars, which was generous, and it only got that because of the good ending. Trust me, this is not a Rec movie. It was just plain bad.

Even with the issues that you pointed out, I still liked the movie. I do think that the script could have used more development. I found myself intrigued at the backstory of the virus and they could have totally expanded on that more.

Well, maybe if they do a sequel, they'll fix all these mistakes and get it right next time. The ending was the best scene with the kids.

even though i did kind of sort of enjoy this film, i agree w/ much of what you wrote. i do like Diego Boneta (Will) but his acting is just really bad much of the time. the Will character kept saying the 2 women's names so many F'ing times i was going to scream. lol.

and it pissed me off so much that they kept being very loud when they were trying to escape in the woods. lol. i did love how the rage/violence only happens for as long as the "high" is. that part (as far as i know) was pretty original.

That's exactly how I felt. They have a good concept, a familiar genre which they do something unexpected. Yet they didn't spend any time on the script and character's backstory.

I really wonder how actors can just do the scene saying the other's name over and over again. Doesn't it feel so fake? Can't they think of something else to say like "hey what's wrong with you?" Because if someone doesn't respond to their name after the first 10 times, they're certainly not going to respond on the 11th. It really takes you out of the movie.

So if the script is something they completely forgot to do, the backstories were something they crammed in at the last minute before having to turn in their homework. Several points were brought up but it never impacted or foreshadowed how the chracters would act later:
1) Why did Antonio lie and say Will was the one who slept with both girls when it was actually him? He died almost immediately so we never got to see how that impacted his character.
2) What was this urgent thing that Michelle had to call home about? Maybe she ran away from home (based on her conversation with her mom at the end)? But she was a counselor in France the year before, so what's the problem with doing the same thing in Spain? Overall, what impact does this have on her character in the story?
3) Was Will a vetrinarian? Pre-med? Why did he not take the shot? And again, what does this have to do with how his character acted later on?
4) Christy was the only one where we have a character we can understand, though it's a very shallow, cliche princess type. But at least we know that and that informs how she reacts to different situations.

That's a very fair read - I guess there was quite a bit of intentional misdirection. I definitely agree that Antonio turning was a huge surprise. With that understanding, the characters make a lot more sense. It still leaves us with the unrealistic dialogue which doesn't allow us a great understanding of them as characters (rather than actors).

Thanks!
