Did Mike Lie?

I watched this a second time tonight and was wondering if Mike lied when he said that Tobi wasn't a match. The scene where he answered the phone was somewhat ambiguous, and I felt Mike might have done that to alleviate Tobi's feelings of regret, and as compensation for his previous behavior after seeing that Tobi did care to some degree. I'm not familiar with the play or the backstory of this movie-is there any possibility of this?

No, Tobi wasn't Mike's father, but Tobi always believed he was. that's why Tobi experienced so much grief.

When you give away the end of a film, it's good to get in the habit of putting a spoiler warning in the subject line. Don't assume that everyone browsing the IMDb boards has already seen the film.

That said, it's possible that the answer to your question lies in the film's title: "Match". If Mike was telling the truth, then the logical title should have been "No Match".

It reminds me of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1032846/combined). It's a movie about a girl getting an illegal abortion. The medic asks whether the pregnancy is more than five months along (because the penalties are higher) and the girl says she doesn't know. No more about it is said within the film's dialogue, but audience members know the answer because it's in the title of the film. Difficult to think of any other film where the title contains important information about the plot that is not otherwise contained in the film, but Match may be a second example.

I agree that people should warn about spoilers, but really. Anyone exploring this board who hasn't seen the movie and would be upset by reading a spoiler has no business going into a post that has the header "Did Mike Lie?".
