Not knowing your dad is hardly a reason to go mental. If it were, half of America would be psychos. The subtext to this story: that you get damaged if you don't come from a traditional family with a man, his wife and any number of children is offensive. Neither politicians nor writers get to decide what a proper family is and who should or should not be damaged as a result.
The additional implication: that a promiscuous woman should be punished for her sins by a life of crushed dreams doing an ordinary job in Smalltown USA is astonishing. Note how the idea that her life as 'idyllic' is treated as unbelievable, ridiculous or self deceiving. And the penalty for the promiscuous man, the absent father? That he will be unloved and lonely till his dying day.
And the absurdity of the final scenes, where Mike finds peace, presumably after a night of cunnilingus with his wife, the logical consequence of attacking an elderly bisexual man you think is your father... well words fail me. Gay bashing boosts your virility and cures your sadness? And how much happier will you be the next morning when you discover that queer isn't really your dad after all!
Seriously, those smiles in the car going to the airport were ridiculous.
