The smartest thing a divorcing couple can do is come to their own agreement and keep lawyers out of it. It's much better to come to an agreement that you can live with than to throw all your money away on a worse deal than you can work out yourselves.

Agree. But I think some of the problem can then come from the judge, basically "forcing" you to get a lawyer or holding bias against the couple.
For some odd reason, the judge still has to sign off on a cooperative divorcing couple. I think the courts should have no place in a mutually decided divorce. Those cases should just be rubber stamped or require no court approval and be automatic.
I did not use a lawyer for my divorce,( except we did a legal consultation.).. my ex-wife and I get a legal separation... and then five years after she left and there was equity in the property then she overturned everything and played the abuse card .
My ex-wife used to tell family friends she can get away with anything because she was bipolar and it is true
