Initial Thoughts

So it looks like it will be a series rather than a movie.

From the picture they released, it seems the Major will have a new look (I'll miss her red eyes!), but I hope they'll have the same English dub voice actors.

First, the Laughing Man. Then, the Individual Eleven. I wonder what the major story arc will be this time.

From the short video they've released on YouTube (link below), it could be a prequel. I can't really be sure, considering the way it's edited -- but it seemed as though the Major didn't recognize Aramaki in one scene. Also, Bateau does not appear in the video. Perhaps it's the story of how section 9 initially came together.

I watched the video and, given a younger Aramaki with dark hair, this might be the moment he recruited Motoko for Section 9. Also, if it's a prequel, we might not see all the familiar gang. From that one flashback episode, we know she fought with a couple of them in South America. But Togusa had only joined at the start of the first movie, so we might not see him unless they run into him while he was still a cop.

In my earlier post I assumed this would be a series, since IMDB put up the home page using its series format, including a link for "Episode List." But do we know for sure? A prequel showing how they came together might only be a movie.

It could be a GITS OVA series (given the title nomenclature). It would've been nice if they'd stepped up the animation (like the rendered intro to the SAC intro) if the characters and look were changing anyway. The trailers I saw did feature cityscapes borrowed from past work though.

The show does have an official website now: http://www.kokaku-a.com/index.php

It's a four 1 hour series that actually comes out in theatre in Japan. It's a new story arc that doesn't connect with the movies or SAC the same way SAC didn't connect with the movies in the first place. All the gang from SAC is there and it's a bit strange. You have to forget what happend in SAC.I'm a bit disapointed as I would have prefer a continuation of SAC which was awesome. The first episode is allright but nothing like the movies or the 'complex' episodes of season 1&2 of SAC.

Yup. It's more or less another soft reboot of the movies as opposed to a straight prequel to SAC. Though like SAC, they're offset chronologically so you can head canon them into one continuity... up to a point.
