Should I watch Season 3?

I felt like Season 2 wrapped up kind of nicely and there are a lot of shows out there that should be stopped being watched way before the series finale (Dexter, Prison Break, Weeds). So I am wondering if Season 3 is enjoyable or should I quit while I am ahead?

reply

Since I agree with you 100% with Dexter and Prison Break, I think my opinion might be worth something since we seem to think alike.

As far as Dexter goes I thought S1 was brilliant then it got progressively worse but then when the Trinity killer showed up that was a high point in the series, only to slowly starting to get worse until the final two seasons when Tom Hank's son says "HELLO WHORE!" and of course, the horrible, horrible final season.

Prison Break should have been a 1 season show, maybe a mini series, when they tried to expand on it everything went to hell. I remember one episode where they apparently decapitate the girlfriend only to bring her back later? I don't know, I don't care.

Heroes was also a show that I just went crazy over in the first season, then season 2 was like... ehhh? and then I just stopped watching S3 midway through because it was horrible.

So if you agree with my assessments then follow my advice.

Penny Dreadful is the equivalent of having the best ingredients in the world for making the best pizza in the world in front of the best oven in the world.

Season 1 was like putting every ingredient in place the way it should be, perfecting the dough, putting it on a stone and placing it on the oven and turning it on at the best temperature.

Season 2 was like forgetting you left the pizza there but thankfully a feminist chef comes over and starts watching over the pizza.

Season 3 is like if the feminist chef (who I imagine as being fat, because she is feminist and they are all fat) takes the pizza off the oven way early and throws it on the floor because the pizza looked a bit red and it reminded her of her PMS and how unfair it was that men don't have PMS so she was triggered and tried to ruin the pizza.

This is what happened to Penny Dreadful. It became a nonsense feminist propaganda bullsht show with unfinished plot points and a rushed ending. Season 3 introduces characters that go nowhere and takes too long closing storylines that weren't as important as Vanessa's. In fact, they play forget about Vanessa at some point. And the villain sucks, bad.

But, as is the nature with pizza, especially "the best pizza in the world" we were talking about, it will be pretty difficult to ruin such a delicious pizza, maybe at the end its just going to taste like dominos but its still edible.

Same with Penny, no matter how many people tried to ruin this show you still have Eva Green and Timmothy Dalton giving their best.

So yes, watch it.

In other words, you have never been with a woman, and thus feel a need to lash out at all strong women to compensate for your complete lack of confidence and manliness.

reply

I strongly resent your depiction of all feminists as being fat, because there is probably a majority of them who are gaunt and haggard, as they struggle to control themselves via anorexia and/or marathon running. These self-righteous shrews are equally as unhappy, obnoxious and strident as their fat sisters, however.

I bet you're really popular with the ladies.

His analogy was nothing but a method of ad-hominem against feminism and only peripherally directed at Penny Dreadful.

Criticism of religion is not racism...

That was the biggest load of crap I've read on IMDb in a while.

Definitely, you'll miss many good things if you skip season 3.

Also, even at its worst, Penny Dreadful is still vastly superior to most modern shows.

reply

No, don't watch it.

The good doesn't make up for all the bad that went down. It gets messy and insulting. If you want to keep good will for the show, stop at 2 and don't look back.

Good advice!! :)

I won't bore you with strained (heh) cooking metaphors.

They clearly threw a lot of money at this show it looks great. S3 is no different.
It is pregnant with potential. Let's face it they threw just about every pre-1900 horror character at it, and invented a few new ones. Done properly they could have made 20 shows.
Ultimately S3 is no different than any that preceded it. Woeful, terrible, abject writing just barely pulled-round and saved by some decent lead actors.
This is not a sustainable template. There's only so far any actor can carry a show, no matter who they are.

When I say "decent lead actors" I do not include Eva Green. She's horrible. 3 seasons of the croaky-voice, furrowed brows and thousand yard stare are more than any reasonable person should be expected to endure. 3 episodes would have been more than enough. She is from the seeming a-la-mode Christian Bale school of nauseating hammy over-acting. Enough already. And then we have Billie Piper. Words fail me. Unfortunately for the viewing public they do not fail her, but she certainly fails them.

Dalton acts rings round all of the others without needing to move out of second gear.

As nice looking escapist background noise, this show is watchable and OK.
More than that, it definitely is not.

Go on Stanley, stick one in Jane Russell & win a goldfish.

^Do not listen to this user. Both Green and Piper give the best performances of their careers, as well as on the show.

I'm a leaf on the wind. Watch as I'm needlessly impaled.

reply

Precisely my point.
Both they, and the show, are abysmal.

If you honestly think they are career defining roles/performances then I wonder at just what kind of crap you've been watching your whole life.

Ten-a-penny dreadful would be nearer the mark.

Bale is a brilliant actor.. as soon as you said that i knew you were a jealous delusional.

reply

Yes, you should watch it, but be prepared for some disappointments. For as good as the first two seasons were, you'll be left saying, "What the hell happened?" They seemed to start a lot of new things that they weren't able to finish. When they get to the end they leave so many loose ends. I just finished the series, and I was very unsatisfied with the final episode. The final season seemed to be far more about a body count than good story telling.

reply

Yes u should watch it. I have just finished season 3 and I must say this must be one of the best tv shows if not the best ever in tv history. Season 1 was such perfection that it was very hard to beat. But nevertheless I find season 3 to be stronger than season 2. Such a shame that it has come to an end. I would love to have season 4. Or if not possible then perhaps a spin off.. I don't know.. But I just love the show. So poetic.. Fantasy but all the emotions felt genuine. So real and relatable. Love all the cast on this show. I hAve developed an interest with poetry while watching this show.

I didn't watch Prison Break, but I agree about Dexter and Weeds; they started out brilliant, but went on long enough to start tanking.

I purely loved seasons 1 and 2 of Penny Dreadful; and season 3 actually got off to a decent start-- but it crashed and burned. I don't know WHAT happened---- I suspect the final season was partly filmed already, when news of cancellation came down and then rewrites done, so that the show just cut off all loose ends and EVERY storyline just ended, sloppily and stupidly, wherever it happened to be...

But I cannot figure out exactly when that happened--- because, honestly, there were so many just DUMB things done throughout the whole season. WHY did Vanessa's therapist look just like the Cut-wife? WHY did Ethan just wake up one day & decide he was evil?

If you're into this sort of thing, you might get a little pleasure out of 'hate-watching' the final season. I gave myself a few laughs, pretending that the Malcom & Kaetenay soryline was a "new show" about a gay couple in the Old West, lookin' for their adopted son---

But no, there is NO reason to watch season 3 & expect it to be a satisfying complement or conclusion to the prior seasons. You will be disappointed.

Sometimes fires don't go out when you're done playin' with them.

I agree with the feeling that the final season 3 was partly filmed already, when news of cancellation came down and then rewrites were done to end the series! It is a shame that they did not end it the way it started!

I must say that I enjoyed the ride until then, the series was a joy of excellent writing containing amazing gothic characters played by excellent actors. I will never forget: Eva Greens seance or Rory Kinears sad Frankensteins "monster", where the monster is what the people around him call him and what he identifies with! Also Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadway, Reeve Carney, Josh Hartnett, Danny Sapani, and especially Simon Russell Beale etc. all do excellent acting work!

I see "Penny dreadful" as an amazing piece of art which had a lot of potential, where the lack of viewers caused the series to end prematurely! Unfortunatlely this market does not promote art, but viewers!

It is not the first or last time that an amazing piece of art has been canceled. I would dare to say that it is more standard than not, see Hannibal or Carnivale!

We should enjoy the ride as long as it leads us! What makes me sad is that "Penny Dreadful" did not get the ending it deserved!

Season 3 is utterly horrible, not worth watching
