Who keeps supporting this franchise and why?

I'm not trying to hate, just genuinely curious because dance flicks just aren't 'in' anymore (the trend went out like 10 years ago, no?) and I don't really know what demographic this is targeting. It makes me sad that movies like this get the okay to be released when actual quality good movies are shelved for years, decades, possibly forever before they even consider being shown in theaters.

I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves.

Viewing these movies has become a "cult icon" kind of experience within my group as we have seen them all and we are all now "committed" to finishing the job (past the point of no return kinda thing").
We know they are going to be bad (some REALLY bad) and make fun of it for days after. It’s kind of like watching bad B movies or "Sharknado". The fun is when it’s finally over.

Either way, if/when another one comes out we will be watching it. Nobody likes a quitter!

River, thank you for your perspective. I guess I can sort of understand that in the same way people watch cheesy horror films or something.

I'm the same way, except I don't even have friends to see it with... But yeah, by some accident I've managed to see every Step Up film so far in theaters, and I feel compelled to keep up the tradition. I know I'm contributing to the problem, but I do hope the series will end now.

A bit angry and bitter that you enjoy these films Jayroo?
Why so mean?
These are dumb and stupid movies that people enjoy for various reasons and that's O.K.

I was wondering that too. They must be making the money to get sequel after sequel made. But, I never hear anyone talk about them or see them reviewed in the media....mmm

And how have sequels managed not to be released direct-to-video?

reply

Its how artist get their new songs out to a larger audience. Its about music sales as there is no more music videos on MTV.

i know in the case of the step films, in particular, they keep making them because they do big business internationally. Even with dropping domestic numbers, the films do enough business abroad to warrant future installments. Just look at this break down:

Step Up: $65,328,121 (domestic) $119,193,847 (worldwide) on a $12 million budget

Step Up 2: The Streets: $58,017,783 (domestic) $150,816,700 (worldwide) on a $17 million budget

Step Up 3D: $42,400,223 (domestic) $159,289,358 (worldwide) on a $30 million budget (inflated due to the 3D)

Step Up Revolution: $35,074,677 (domestic) $140,470,746 (worldwide) on a $33 million budget

So even if there is fatigue for this franchise in the states, people are loving them elsewhere.

I'm puzzled by this franchise as well.

I saw the first movie when it first came out. I was 16. I really enjoyed it, actually. I bought the DVD and me and my friends watched it many times.

By the time the second one came out, I was 18. I saw it once in theaters and thought it was mediocre.

Saw like 5 minutes of the third one on TV and wasn't into it. I changed the channel.

Didn't bother at all with the fourth one.

I can't believe a fifth one is coming out!!

Dance flicks are great and I don't think they're a "trend"...well, during the 80s-90s a bunch were made, and now although they've become less common, it's just a matter of new ones trying to be original and good. I'm personally not a big fan of the "Step Up" movies (a lot of the dancing is fun to watch, but give me a music video.) I guess they're just keeping on with it 'cause they know it'll get money out of SOMEBody...

I love these movies because of the dancing, and moose for the most part. I mean of course it's always gonna be what we expect the same ol concept. They break up the group they get back together, two people fall in love, they win the whole thing and happily ever after , with cheesy little jokes in between. I think we all knew every line in this movie before they said it lol. I came for the hype , the new dance moves and choreography, music. like the scene where the little kids start dancing with them was sick as hell. I give this movies dancing and choreography 8/10, and the video they made was dope. The concept was about the same as every other one beside little things.

It's funny that these sequels keep going theatrical while they're about the same D-list acting and writing as the crappiest Bring It On installment. At least those went straight to video where these sequels belong.
