Like me, did anyone else find themselves on high alert all the way through, watching the background with hawk-like intensity? This is IMDb, so I'll expect a few blunt "no" responses. Patricia Rozema did a fantastic job of keeping that tension at the forefront of the film.

No, you're over thinking it. You hawked it so much that you failed to see how stupid the characters are.
They're in a secluded woods but yet wander off by themselves without thinking of safety matters. Such a smart thing to go outside and leave your gun far out of reach during an apocalypse.
Don't be an elitist and act like have a broader view of this dull pointless movie. Put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig. You're not special.
Your points about the film are fair game, your aspersions toward me are baffling.
This movie is not a lipstick-wearing pig! Far from it. I'm not going to address all the points about taking guns into forests etc and that these women don't see the forest as a scary unknown but what I want to highlight is the skills that are evident from the director.
For those who view these type of movies as puzzling and dull ( clearly missing the point of the movie), why watch something that clearly isn't up your street ; this is what baffles me.
I found this movie very watchable and layered with subtle character studies and comments on human nature. It is a very intelligent and thoughtful piece with solid performances and effective direction and writing. A good adaptation of the novel that doesn't lose the subtleties of the book.

I like these post apocalyptic films, also survival stuff like Alone and Survivorman. Its always interesting to see what people do to survive in these situations, whether real or fiction. Usually I am thinking "I wouldn't do that" or something similar.
I found the birth scene overwrought, as I usually find all movie births. I had three kids, all with a midwife, no drugs and no screaming or freaking out. Sure, it hurts, but on the pain scale I suffered more from a really bad toothache. Most of my friends agree that movie births are totally unreal.
What would worry more than black mold (and not all mold is black mold...most isn't) would be diseases that a newborn would not be protected against.
