Bad in the typical ways

Bad acting. Unreal monologue/dialogue. Characters that are just plain not likeable.

It's just bad storytelling.

I disagree strongly. The acting was very good. It had interesting dialogue which is rare in gay films and you really believed these two could be together. I also really enjoyed the whole Andy Warhol connection. A breath of fresh air in sea of boring gay-themed films.

This was really good.

I'm with you. I liked Getting Go very much and and all in all thought it was a very original film. It is also quite thought provoking as it touches on some themes and perspectives that I have not seen/heard elsewhere. I thought it was very well acted and found both leads to be very appealing in their very different ways.

I respect your right to have an opinion and movie critiques are somewhat subjective, but I strong disagree with you also. For someone such as myself that has been looking for "good" gay films and has been frequently disappointed, Getting Go is a very good film.

Granted, no one is going to win an Oscar for their performance in this, but the acting was very natural and very relate-able. With very few exceptions, the dialogue and storytelling were top notch. I found myself liking both characters very much.

I don't mean to slam the OP, but it seems like you either expected something else or are too far away from your idealistic, silly 20s to remember what that was like. 9/10 for me!

reply

I agree with the OP. Tanner Cohen was OK and Matthew Camp really tries but when you are propping a whole movie on 2 actors? It didn't work that well. Near the end scenes where Go was trying to express confusion/sadness it seemed forced. I hate "indie movie monologues" too. All the pillow-talky "Is it OK to be sexy?, etc." scenes where one character would drone on for 3 minutes. Instead of exploring these notions and trusting the audience to follow along the characters just say stuff and we are supposed to be awed by how clever and deep they are? Sorry. This movie tried to be smart but kept falling into the trap of just showing as much of Matthew Camp as he or the censors would allow and calling it a day.

reply

completely agree. Matthew Camp and Tanner Cohen were good, but their dialogue for most of it seemed unnatural, especially in those pillow talk scenes. It thought it was a good movie none the less. I think in a normal movie with lighting and sets the dialogue wouldn't have seemed so unnatural since the whole movie is shaped that way ( Love & Other Drugs, Blue Valentine comes to mind) but in indie films where they're going for "real" aspect, i think you really need great actors for it to play off.

I must agree with clocksnmirrors - the acting is passable but there is little in the way of storyline and this is not a movie I would watch again. One mark out of ten.
