What a crappy ending

I sat through two hours of Chiller's ten-minute commercial breaks for that terrible ending? Sean Young's character should have been thrown headfirst into the pit. Unsatisfying b-movie garbage ending.

utter trash!

I agree and the daughter apologies to her?? That woman was the cause of all the girls problems to begin with.

We live by the Sun, we feel by the Moon

reply

Yeah, very poor ending. I think we were all hoping for a very clever twist to salvage the film, but it was not to be.

reply

I don't think it was a 'crappy ending' but I think most people disliked it because they are used to (and expected) a different ending.
But this film was obviously going for a different POV. I certainly would have liked a happier ending!
But the ending, as is, is chilling.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

I totally agree. The story makes sense, it is good scripted and acted. The characters unexpectly become likeable through the movie. I see a kind of satire to traditional family values in this story.

I feel the same and

I feel it is too empty.
After the death I don't expect the guy sitting in his room.

It was what it was. The Pit wanted what it wanted. There was no other ending. Though the "spirit of the pit" or whatever that boy was did offer her her life in exchange for Dwai, but she refused to leave. Guilt or accepting responsibility? After all her lie killed her brother, best friend, best friends mother, her father, and husband to be (no real loss to her there).

I don't know what you were expecting (the pit to eat everyone but her?).

Exactly. Even though I definitely would have preferred a happier ending, if you watch the film closely you'll see that the ending is *clear*, long before the films ends.
The Pit is their "God", and it is in charge. Ada running to town yet being just as affected by its powers shows that there is NO escape.
Not unless she is willing to watch every single person in her community die. Even if she agreed to Dawai's offer to go next, it was highly likely that The Pit would soon choose her yet again.
Even Dawai himself seems to realize this when you watch him at the very end.
Yes he was spared....but for how long?

Didn't her grandfather defy the Pit and live? And the rest of the community apparently then did not die off. Maybe that put the idea in her head that she could get away with her deception?

Of course grand dad was not doing so hot but is that the Pit' revenge or old age?

I agree with the set in stone aspect.

reply

I thought of that too. The Pit did kill some people, such as the Shunned Boy, because of Grandpa.
But then I figured perhaps The Pit realized that Grandpa, thanks to the townspeople, was literally *suffering enough*.
The townspeople realized what he had done & they poisoned him. He did not die, but close enough.
He is a virtual vegetable, and banished & lonely.

The Pit seemed to choose exactly what would hurt the person the most.

Ah. right... forgot the part about the people poisoning him. That may have appeased the Pit so no more people suffered.

Over all a interesting film. Not unheard of (a community controlled by a supernatural or superstitious force, Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" comes to mind) but well done. Lauren Ashley Carter is quickly becoming one of my favorite genre actresses. I hope she gets a break into a big budget film so she gets the attention she deserves!

reply

I thought of The Lottery too...that's why the ending worked.

The whole movie was building and building with tension and dread...like Freddy or Jason staling their prey. Only this was a metaphysical monster..with rules.

Loved this flick!

Such an anticlimax. I wanted the pit creature to come out and kill everyone except Ada and Dawai.

Well acted. Crap story.

It's a bad ending because it wasn't rainbows and puppies?

Lol, this is a goddamn horror movie, whats wrong with you.
