So...telephones didn't exist back in '71?
Y'know, when he was at the pub having a pint...could have asked the bartender "Hey, can I use your phone"
Casually call the POLICE/ARMY and arrange for a pickup point.
A plothole I do NOT FORGIVE.

concerning everything about making intelligent decisions to get back to a safe area.
In reality, the "non-safe" areas were a LOT smaller than the safe areas. When he was at the pub, he only had to keep strolling northward and walk into any open police station or hospital to be "safe". Or just keep strolling.
When he was at the pub, he only had to keep strolling northward and walk into any open police station or hospital to be "safe".You may be right, but Hook doesn't know that. He has no idea where he is and may well not have any money on him, as he is wearing given clothes. He's also been told to just stay where he is at the pub and really is not sure whether the patrons are friend or foe. So he's really unlikely to ask the bar man can he phone the local army base or constabulary.🐭 share
He was given a briefing at the beginning telling him this. I've never been to Ireland or NI, never mind these neighborhoods & I knew it. He had almost every reason to know the patrons were not foe. The kid said "Brilliant" (or something like that) when he realized the guy was a British soldier. The kid bragged about his (father or uncle, I forget which) fighting for the UK in (WWII was it). The kid got them through blockades. The kid took him to the pub. The kid obviously has the run of the pub. The patrons didn't give Hook any notice.
So, all you have is
The reason our hero does dumb things is that our hero is pretty dumb. He was thinking about breakfast during the morning briefing. He doesn't know how to keep track of direction / compass points. He doesn't really pick up on most of what people say. He's just dumb.
He was given a briefing at the beginning telling him this.LOL! Of course! The new recruit should remember everything he gets in his first briefing and you've never been to Northern Ireland but you could do better. Let's not forget too, that he's been chased around the streets of Belfast, in a blind panic, being shot at and also had the crap kicked out of him, by an unruly mob. Is this comedy hour? And yes, according to you he should have put complete trust in the kid, he's known for the best part of oh, may be 30 minutes.

shareNowhere was safe in Northern Ireland in the 70's. If he made a phone call the Protestants might have thought he was an IRA informer.
During the troubles a totally innocent British couple got lost and stopped at a pub to ask directions. They did not know it was a well known IRA pub. Once their accents were heard an active member was alerted and they were shot dead in their car.
That's how bad it was.
he had found a place that should be friendly to him, but might not be, I think he was assessing the situation!
shareMore like a plot line you may not fully understood. Look at him sitting at the bar, he's genuinely terrified. He is completely lost at this stage and literally doesn't know yet if the people in the bar can even be trusted. Nobody is giving him any information and the secrecy adds to the paranoia. Maybe a public phone box on the street, but these were usually vandalised and didn't work usually on purpose.
As for just walking in the right direction as someone else pointed out here, his first day in the city and the streets basically all look the same. The briefing before the mission was poor, as a result of the lieutenant's poor judgement of how serious the situation really was, so study of the map, with locations of safe houses, evacuation routes, rendezvous points etc were all omitted. Also I didn't see anyone with a compass, North isn't so easy after all.
Great film and realistic I believe, since I do have first hand experience in the military. The failing to provide leadership by the lieutenant is to me the *beep* here.
