Steven Seagal's 'accent'????

First of all, I am not a huge fan of Steven Seagal anyway but I thought I would give this movie a try. I couldn't find much in the way of a description of this movie so I could not tell at first where it was supposed to be located. However, while trying to figure out (and trying to HEAR what he was saying at all) what his accent was supposed to be I finally decided he was talking much like an uneducated black person would in many cases (example: "fittin' to" in the place of "fixing to"--which is a common colloquial term in the south but not sounding like this did in this movie). This sounded so strange to me and I don't understand why he chose to speak in this manner. Does anyone know where his character was supposed to be from and why he sounded so incredibly stupid in this movie? I read in another thread where he has at times identified strongly with other races and has even gone so far as to actually claim to be a part of a different race and is currently attempting to portray himself as black sometimes:

While I don't know if this is true, that is certainly what I thought was going on in this movie.

Needless to say, I found it very distracting and difficult to finish watching this movie for this and many other reasons. In my opinion, Steven Seagal was used as a box office draw for his name but he really did not contribute much to the movie at all and actually detracted from it.

He has been using his own version of a lousianna,Cajun accent for awhile now.he even uses it in hi reality show.

OK thanks for that reply. I have not seen him in anything since his very early movies and I knew he did not talk like that normally. Also, he had several scenes where I noticed he hardly had an accent at all. It was just very confusing to me as to what he was trying to portray.

Yah, I've noticed that, too. It's annoying =)

Don't forget Native American and Japanese!

It's weird but his Italian phase wasn't too bad... in Out For Justice it seemed somewhat believable.

His Native American and Japanese phase... well, the Native American part could almost fit. He does sound like he could almost be one, but the Japanese part, not really.

I don't really his phase of pretending to be an overweight black man.
