Black Comedy consists of four things

Graphic descriptions of sexual acts
Getting "whoopins"
Being broke/Not paying bills
White people do this/black people do that

Such a WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS!

What's funny is that this movie didn't have a single one of those things, so there goes your theory, I guess?

reply

I don't believe you.

It's true. I can't stand "black people do this/white people do that" jokes. It makes me want to stick pointy things in my ears and set myself on fire. I would not be a fan of any comedian who used them. There were no graphic descriptions of sexual acts (I'm not even quite sure what you mean by that...like describing fvcking in great detail? ). No poor jokes because I don't even think Kevin Hart grew up poor. Nothing about whoopings...Kevin Hart is a little more original than your average black comedian. I think that's why he is so popular. Actually, I don't know any black comedians today that use any of those jokes you mentioned. Most of that went out the window with the 90's.

reply

Kevin Hart very rarely if ever even talks about being black. It's non-racial humor from a black guy's point of view.

reply

^^Precisely.

Personally I think there can be great humor when comparing two different cultures just like when you compare the sexes, but to each his own.

As far as the OP's gripes, I have certainly seen some of those subjects become the bases of a lot of comedians acts, but just because a handful of bad comics do that doesn't mean all black comics do that. That is what is known as stereotyping.

Not to mention that I've seen gay comics make gay jokes or comparisons between gays and straights, female comics talk about being a woman or comparisons between men and women, jewish comics talk about being jewish or comparing jewish/non-jewish people, hispanic comics, fat comics, etc. It's so common I just don't see the need to complain about it.

You joke about what you know or what you have a unique perspective on. As long as its funny I don't care what comics talk about.

Don't try to cash in love, that check will always bounce.

lmao I was just sitting here thinking the same thing. I saw it yesterday and I can't recall any of those jokes being made

reply

Don't make me go link a bunch of comedy acts on Youtube where they do just that. Maybe Kevin Hart is breaking the trend, but I refuse to believe it hasn't been part of his acts at some point. Unless he's trying to crossover to white audiences.

Yeah, because "a bunch of comedy acts on Youtube" has to prove what all black comedy consists of. Idiot.

When the examples appear more often than not, then the exceptions prove the rule, god dammit.

Whatever you may believe (or refuse to believe) is irrelevant to the subject of this thread. Idiot.

Is it? When the predecessors and other hangers-on keep treading the same old ground, I think it's more than fair to come into something with low expectations.

These aren't just "Youtube videos", these are clips from comedy specials and what have you, and they all share these same themes. The black experience in their comedy share these unified themes, and they're not funny, they're just tragic. You have to admit, there's not much there that a universal audience would find amusing.

If you have that kind of time on your hands then go for it but as far as let me explain goes he didn't tell those kinds of jokes and if he has a growing white audience it's because they have seen his stand up on youtube that's what a lot of his fans said in the movie hell that's how I found out about him.

The OP hasnt seen that many Black comedians. It never fails.

Im the Alpha and the Omoxus. The Omoxus and the Omega

I have seen enough black comedy, it's the reason I'm pointing out these common themes from what I have observed.

It's true. Hart's comedy isn't the typical Def Jam experience. And not all black comedy is like that. And just because a black comedian has delved into it at some point, what does that prove?

It's true, that when black comics start out on the black comedy circuit, you have to be able to relate to the majority of the black experience in this country. Racism and poverty is a large part of that for many blacks. A black comedian would never be successful trying to pull off routines in the style of Gilbert Gottfried or Lewis Black. Even white audiences would never find it credible or funny.

But as black comics get more and more successful, they rely less on those topics. Cedric the Entertainer isn't one to talk about a lot of sex. Steve Harvey talked a lot about the church, his past jobs, current events, the presidents and family. I just listened to two Dave Chappelle stand-up sessions. His routines are much different than the average black comic. Lavelle Crawford is another one. What about Sinbad? George Wallace is another. And don't forget the originator Bill Cosby, who never brought up any of that (except maybe tha ass whuppins). And now Kevin Hart has broken away from the pack and is poised to become the next big thing where Chris Rock has left a vacancy. The point Im making is, in order to get a foot in the door in comedy, you have to work and relate to your own culture and community at some point and that's where your word of mouth comes from to get you on your way.

A large part of what makes stand-up comedy work successfully is the ability to make your audience like and believe you and how you deliver your comedy to the onstage. The material is only part of the equation.

I tried my hand at comedy 15 years ago. Me and my friends were at an open mic at a black comedy club. They told me to go up because they thought I the funniest. But for the most part, I bombed not because didn't do any of the cliche topics but because I never really had the crowd from the beginning. I got a few laughs when I talked about missing my girlfriend's birthday and trying to give find her a gift at almost closing time at a Rite Aid drug store. That got some laughs but by that time, I had pretty much lost the majority of the crowd. I saw amateur black comics come on before me who talked about their mechanics, their laundromats, their dogs, their in-laws, etc. Some were hilarious and others who just did the same old sex and race jokes, fell flat and didn't get a laugh. The truth is black audiences are tough. It's more important that you're funny and likable than whether you're routine is full of cliches.

I'm sorry HCS but you've actually given him more credit than he deserves.

And people who told you none of your examples are in there are flat out liars!

He DOES mention graphic sex to dead response. He mentions getting long football BJ's, Dick on a glass, and screwin a cowboy...all of which include him showing us the motions of doing these things, too.

He does mention fighting, getting ass whooped BY WOMEN! He talks about his son getting an Ass whoopin by another little boy...WHILE HE WATCHED!

His bit set ups are incredibly long with the audience not making a noise.

He does several really long rambling, contorting sessions without a laugh only to end them by screaming out the N-word to thunderous response from the audience.

It reminds me of when Bobcat Goldthwait would scream for big laughs. Except Bobcat had an audience laughing during his bit set up, too. This is mostly him talking and contorting to silence. For looooong stretches.

after about 45 minutes of this he goes into his OLD Bum Hands skit ...and now even that is falling flat until he ramps it up with lots of swearing and N-words added.

I've seen him be far funnier.

reply

Wow your right he did and it was damn funny.

Please look up what black comedy means. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Black+Comedy.

If you mean comedy that is performed by black comedians, I suggest you open your eyes and stop watching the same few black comedians you might have heard of.
