Well instead of basing my answer on racism like the posts above (except for the one who said A), let's look at how historically Madea films have done on their first weekend:

1) Diary of a Mad Black Woman : $21.9 million (total $50.6 million) (2005)
2) Madea's Family Reunion : $30 million (total $63.2 million) (2006)
3) Meet the Browns : $20 million (total $41.9 million) (2008)
3) Madea Goes to Jail : $41 million (total $90.5 million) (2009)
5) I Can Do Bad All By Myself : $23.4 million (total $51.7 million) (2010)
4) Madea's Big Happy Family : $25 million (total $53.3 million) (2011)
5) Madea's Witness Protection : $25.3 million (total $65.6 million) (2012)

Therefore using the above evidence I think that it is safe to say that A Madea Christmas should pull in A.) $20 - 29 million in its first week at the box office.

Let's not forget that this time, the movie is opening alongside The Hobbit.. So expectations should be low in my opinion.

I'm not sure WTF racism has to do with it. And I can't figure out why, in America, the land of free speech, people can't say something sucks without being called racist.

Or am I wrong? Is it only ok to say something sucks as long as the person producing it isn't black?
People have been saying the M. Night Shyamalan has been sucking for years and no one accuses them of being racist. Shyamalan put out a couple of decent movies once upon a time. That's more than I can say for Perry. If Perry were a white director like say Uwe Boll we wouldn't be having this discussion. Because Boll is white, therefore he's allowed to suck.

Now that we have a black president we can't say that black people suck anymore. Obama sucks. He's an idiot. Or, at the very least, a fraud. I don't say that because I'm racist. I say that because it's true and I'm not afraid to speak the truth even when it's offensive.

And guess what GW wasn't all that bright either. Arnold was a huge disappointment. Meg Whitman would have been a disaster but Hillary scares the hell out of me. So what does that prove? That after all these years we've finally discovered that black people make just as crappy politicians as white people. And black people can also suck as directors.

And because Perry's movies suck and people are finally starting to figure that out I predict this one won't do as well as anything before it. ($20-21m first weekend $36m total) If I'm wrong I'll be the first one to admit that people are still even dumber than I thought they were - and that's saying something.

Your problem is over-simplification. It isn't an either/or situation. It is demonstrably true that a lot of people will say it sucks because they are racist. That doesn't mean everybody who says it sucks is racist, but anyone who uses racial language in their denunciation or even simply proclaims suckage without any supporting explanation is going to lose the benefit of the doubt because of that large contingent of racists who do exactly the same thing.

If you have a problem with people thinking your opinions are racist and you think you aren't racist then you need to do a better job of communicating the reasoning behind your opinions. If you do that and people still think you are racist, well then maybe you need to some self-examination.

reply

I'm not sure I agree that there ever really was a benefit of the doubt.

Look, I'm sorry I was born white. I'm sorry that my parents chose to live in a neighborhood that was predominantly (almost exclusively) white thereby depriving me of the opportunity of a more cultural upbringing. In fact, our family was so white-bread that if it hadn't been for bacteria we would have had no culture at all. We were so white that a slice of American cheese on wonder bread was considered haute cuisine. Again, none of that was my fault.

All I can do is live my own life and respect others enough to allow them to do the same. Personally I hate racism, bigotry, ignorance and prejudice as much as anyone. I've met a lot of people in this world I care not to associate with but so far the worst of the worst have been skinhead neo-Nazis. Not because they're white. But because they're self imposed ignorance has deprived them of seeing anything but hatred.

I recently saw an interview with Morgan Freeman (no relation). He said the quickest way to forget about racism was to quit talking about it. He scoffed at the idea of a Black History month. "You want to sum up my entire history in one month?" he said. Why isn't there a Jewish history month? Or an Indian history month?

Morgan Freeman in a talented actor - not a black actor or an African American actor - he's just plain talented. As is Denzel Washington, Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law, Jamie Fox, Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry...all talented actors? BTW where did the term "actress ever come from? It's sexist. We don't have directoresses, produceresses, writeresses. Why can't a woman director stand on her own merits without being set aside as a woman?

Bottom line: I think you make some fair points. But ...is "suckage" really a word?

On the internet no one knows you are a dog.

You have all the benefit of the doubt you might want right here.

FYI, actor is gender neutral. However in modern theater gender is typically a qualification for a role. Lexical gender is a convenient short-hand, most languages genderize all nouns. English is rare in that way. But to the larger point, Morgan Freeman is wrong. He asked why isn't there a white history month, to which the obvious answer is that in the USA every month is white history month.

Ignoring an obvious visible characteristic won't make racism go away, it just makes people uncomfortable talking about race which builds walls. Racism will never go away, it is in our genes to be tribal (and tribalism in moderate doses is a good thing, monocultures are not robust). The best we can hope for is that we get to a point where it is evenly spread around in all directions rather than a societal standard that oppresses or elevates specific groups. Having grown up in one of the most ethnically diverse (and consequently racially accepting) societies in the world, that's been my personal experience.

reply

I'm also sorry you were "born white". You are great disappointment.

reply

Its only becomes racist when someone refers to the film or the writer/director in derogatory terms.

If they don't like the film that's fine. If they don't like it because it has a primary African American Cast then that's racist.

I just finished watching it. I laughed. The movie was made to make people laugh and hold up a mirror to the audience. TP movies and make money and that just makes many people jealous.

reply

Madea Christmas will do very well. I see it making easily $25 million, even with the Hobbit coming out.

Here's the reasons why:

Black people like Madea.

White people like Madea.

White people like Larry The Cable Guy.

Black people will rent the Hobbit before watching it at the movies.

Ted (open at 53 million), Magic Mike (open at 39 million) and Madea Witness Protection (open at 25 million) back in June 29, 2012. So yeah, even against stiff competition, it will do well.

reply

correction... Black people would NEVER watch the Hobbit

reply

Correction: I'm black and I've watched the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy at the theater on their initial release years ago. I also own the extended cut trilogy on DVD. I saw the Hobbit last year at the theater. Your argument/point is both ignorant and invalid.

reply

I'm black too and I have watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit in the theaters, as well. As far as the Madea films, some are pretty good and some are pretty bad. But one thing you can say about Tyler Perry, the man makes money. Check out the total box office returns for his films (713 million):

I am white and I hate Larry the Cable Guy even more than Madea.

It will most likely make A: $20-29 Million. To a lot of black people, anything by Tyler Perry is like a big summer blockbuster flick to them. So they all come out to see it, hence why they usually make so much. So some black folk will see Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas this weekend while some white folk will go see The Hobbit. For the most part.

I am a thread killer. That's what I do. I post in a thread and then it dies.

7 million this weekend, 20 million gross lifetime.
