Loved this show but something went south in Season 3

I loved seasons 1 and 2 of this show. I thought it was cleverly written and very sharp, not to mention hilarious. It really had a modern Larry Sanders-esque and Entourage style humour to it......
Then Season 3 began and something happened. It got unbelievably outrageous and absurd. Specifically Boris' plotline about founding his own religion. It was just too stupid to enjoy. The plotline with Kevin and Regina also went in way too zany a direction to the point where it was cartoonish.
What happened? Where did the sharp Hollywood satire go?

I still liked it but it didn't have the same "It" as the 1 & 2. I guess because their personalities are so great is why it's still good to me?

But what may have happened, Kevin's too busy to put the same efforts towards the show?

And/or just out of steam in general?

l still really liked season 3 and thought there was tons of hysterical stuff, but you are definitely right the Boris storyline and Regina storyline was mediocre and a they really did go way over the top with some stuff this season. Season one definitely had a more Larry Sanders, Larry David feel than 2 and certainly more than this third season.

Show is still killing it though in my opinion, I really hope they can keep churning seasons out.

I agree. I'm trying to get through season 3 on Netflix now, and it is quite poor in comparison to seasons 1 and 2. It feels like they barely had a script and tried to compensate with ridiculous storylines (Kevin's amnesia, Boris's religion, George Lopez being thrown in as another hater), over-the-top acting, slapstick, and poorly done improv.

I'm so sad! Season 2 was pretty great. Some of the episodes were so well written and so funny they could be classics (the baby shower planning episode stands out in particular. Overall, I think the women actors have been much funnier than the men). The guest stars didn't feel wasted like they are in season 3. I hope they can get the magic back, because this show once was worthy of going several seasons.

I couldn't finish season 3, but decided to give season 4 a chance. So far it's a lot better.

This season has me hysterically laughing every episode so far. They definitely stepped it up. There really isn't much funnier on TV right now.
