The machine made no sense

At first they described the machine as a radio that transmits information through background radiation in the universe, ok i was on board with that but later when they start using it its taking pictures and returning images to there handheld controller? They don't give any explanation for that at all. Then it goes one step further into nonsense when they start saying that its sending a signal out into the universe and bringing back pictures...

That's not how cameras work and not what the machine was supposed to do or how it was made to work. Cameras capture light that hits the sensor in the camera they don't go get images and bring them back. We basically have a big computer in a warehouse with a wired handheld controller. There's no camera components to the thing, they take pictures by pointing the wire end at things haha. There's nothing in it that's even capable of capturing light and then somehow there able to send data out in the universe that can bring back pictures without any hardware to capture the light needed to do that? it makes no sense.
