Blehh!

My honest thought on this: not a success in any aspect.

I wanted to say different; I still have high regard for this show as a piece of theatre. But everything in this seemed to be about posturing, from the "GFC in London" scenario to the cast who didn't act, just struck poses. Even the songs weren't acted, for the most part, and they really should have been. Instead of musical phrasing or telling the story, they were generally delivered as if the singer was looking for the next spot to go into a hyper adenoidal belt.

I guess that's what the "Arena" means in the title: everything's posed in tableaux. But for me, what that meant was that the show had none of its usual power, and it didn't even feel like it was telling a cohesive story.

As others have said, the modernised scenario really didn't work very well. Was it trying to say the story of Jesus was "timeless" (it isn't) or had relevance to today (it doesn't, not directly) — or is an implicit admission that modern audiences ca't relate to anything unless it's put on their terms?

I think it's clear I was not part of the target audience for this production. Glad I hadn't bought tickets for it.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Shame that you found it unappealing. I actually thought the opposite. I didn't think it would work but have come to really like this version. I saw the arena show and after a while I got used to the modern take. I will admit that I wish in parts that Ben Forster (plays Jesus) sang Gethsemene (and other songs) straight rather than put in all the vibratos, etc. The best singer of Gethsemene is John Farnham (Australian singer) but am digressing... Some of the "singing" is almost like screaming. May have overacted in a couple of spots. One wonders whether that is the fault of the director(s)? The show that I saw, Tim Minchin sang a lot better than on the DVD. They all did. Methinks they may have released the wrong show to DVD.

I've seen JCS in various formats and various casts (pretty much have all recordings of this show that are avail in Australia). Each one is a different interpretation for the times. This one, a lot of people didn't "get" because of the modern take (mobile phones, ipads, etc) as they probably were expecting Jesus to be in robes set in Jerusalem. With this version, it could be set anywhere. Have to think that Jesus lives in these times not 2000 years ago, then it probably will sit better and you may "get" this version.

I really liked this version, although I did find it more harrowing and distressing than the film.

I didn't mind the play but I felt at times it looked more like a concert. For some reason I felt Melanie C was miscast for the role as Mary Magdalene.

Brilliant cast....not a bad interpretation totally destroyed by the "what were they thinking" Ben Forster
A product of reality tv......more "the weakest link" than a superstar
