Overrated movie full of old ideas.

I went into this movie expecting to like it as literally every critic I care about had a positive opinion of Jojo Rabbit.

Ok, I smiled a few times, especially at Norman Rockwell and Waititi Hitler's antics, but everything else was something I had seen in others movies; The Tin Drum (outcast boy growing up in Nazi Germany), Hitlerjunge Salomon (Imaginary friend Hitler), Swing Kids (kids dancing in Nazi Germany) , Monsieur Batignole (One of the better movies where someone reluctantly hide Jews), Slaughterhouse-Five (The Super Nazi uniform) and even Iron Sky (Rebel Wilson seemed straight out of that movie).

There was nothing fresh about this. Yes, Nazis were bad and racism is stupid, but what else do you have to offer?

At best, this made me want to re-watch Moonrise Kingdom, which is 20 times better and without nazis.

each to their own. I usually love Wes Anderson films but couldn’t get past the first 30 mins of Moonrise due to boredom. Jojo however was easily the best film of 2019 for me and equally as good as Waititis Hunt for the Wilderness People.

The terrible thing is, these movies trivialize racism.

It was really Tribalism.

Germans are a tribe and Jews are a tribe and their philosophies clashed because the two groups should not have been together. The jews traveled there, attempted to exert their philosophies and were crushed by the home group.

In addition, the Germans had very valid reasons for hating them. They were valid but horribly acted upon. And, you will never see a movie about that.

Here is WHY the Germans did what they did and believed what they believed. Instead, you get cartoon depictions which will only all it it happen again.

A majority of European Jews look as European as their gentile counterparts. Philosophy and religious differences aside, it was the Nazis who used traditional Anti-Semitic tropes to promote their own movement because when the majority of the populace is angry and disenfranchised it's easy to scapegoat a small but high profile group of people, even though they look just like you. Case in point, Scarlett Johansson is of Ashkenazi descent yet she looks just as Central/Northern European as any other blonde/light eyed female.

It's this year's "woke" film choice. When they encounter a "woke" film, today's modern critic instantly realizes that such a film is completely immune from any and all criticism, otherwise there could be serious repercussions to one's career. Other critics would pile on and say "hey, look at this NAZI over here who doesn't like JoJo Rabbit." So you get an "emperor with no clothes" situation where everyone gushes over how great the film is, but nobody actually likes it.

JoJo Rabbit is stupid, insipid, low, and above all, not funny.

And I completely agree that every single thing in this film is simply ripped off from something else that came before it. Literally every joke / gag can be traced back to some other work.

NO STABBING.

That's funny.

It has bright spots - and a very engaging performance by Roman Griffin Davis - but I'm inclined to agree... I have enjoyed all of Waititi's films to date, albeit all with some reservations, but I thought this was a missed opportunity which too often fell back on lame slapstick and forced pathos. It's not bad, but I think it's his weakest film to date.

i feel you could easily take out nazi element and make the exact same movie about any war.

Then the movie is not for you. But it is suitable for people who haven't seen all those other movies!

don't forget the great "life is beautiful"(1997) - such a great take on a comedy mixed with tragedy!!
