Other similarly intense films?

Since Whiplash is one of my all-time favorite films and is also possibly the most intense film I've seen, I was wondering if there were any other films that had a similar level of intensity.

I did some searching on my own for this but haven't found any of the commonly mentioned films to be as intense (and I had already seen them) which include Prisoners, Sicario, No Country for Old Men.

blackswan shares the similar topic with whiplash, but it isnt as intense as whiplash..not even close
social network...that film is a totally different topic, but it has the similar level of intensity...especially the editing part

reply

I have actually seen both of those but did like them, particularly The Social Network which is also one of my favorite films so it was very clearly a great suggestion.

how about the prestige
the best film of chris nolan has ever made in my list. but it isnt very intense.

Try Hitchcock? Rear Window, in particular.

Full Metal Jacket is mentioned in tandem with this film a lot.
Taxi Driver
Collateral
Reservoir Dogs
Oldboy (I've only seen the Korean film, I can't speak for the remake)
Dog Day Afternoon

I'm not sure any of those have quite what you're looking for, but they're pretty thrilling/ intense. At the very least, I don't think any of them will waste your time.

I enjoyed Collateral, Reservoir Dogs, and Old Boy (Korean version) so I'll give the others a look. I've had intentions to watch Rear Window, Taxi Driver, and Full Metal Jacket for a while so I'll try to get to them sooner rather than later

reply

The first part of Full Metal Jacket in particular, I think, will be what you're looking for. I'm not sure if Taxi Driver or Rear Window will, but again, even if they're not, they're still excellent flicks.

reply

Bit late to the party but can I recommend the Hateful Eight? Watched it recently and thought the atmosphere was fantastic. Very tense and also very grisly.

reply

It's very, very different to all the above (and excellent) films, but I always thought Lost Highway by David Lynch was massively intense and a study in how to instill a feeling of impending darkness into the viewer, especially in the first half of the movie...

PS I saw Whiplash less than a week ago, have told pretty much everyone I have met about it and bought it for myself and a friend already. It absolutely blew me away! :-)

Glengary Glenross

Seconded

Yeah, GGG is the best comparison out of anything on this list that others have submitted.

Requiem for a Dream, The Battleship Potemkin, and Dial M for Murder are my suggestions.

Black Swan was certainly the film that came to mind – it builds the intensity in a very similar way, with more than a nod to Dario Argento, like a piece of music rising to a huge crescendo

But oddly another film it reminded me of was Steve Jobs – with Michael Fassbender .. It's a more cerebral intensity, but I suppose they both left me with quite a similar feeling – somewhere between exhaustion and euphoria

If you want a movie that makes you feel the same level of discomfort, watch "In the Company of Men" with Aaron Eckhart. Actually, that movie may be more uncomfortable.

Good call.

If you haven't seen it you should watch Children of Men. Another I would choose would be Danny Boyle's Sunshine.

Drink up, let's boo boo.
