The plot was cartoonish at times. He gets hit by car but proceeds to go to band practice? ha! Jk Simmons character was way over the top. These things don't happen in real life. The dinner table and break-up scene was literally just there to push the narrative forward but again was not believable! Overrated movie!
shareI agree!! Way too intense. That guy would never be able to treat his band like that. That scene after the car crash was, as you say, unbelievable. I think J.K. Simmons won a supporting Oscar because he had to exert so much energy.
shareI tend to agree. It was an interesting premise, but it was OTT. If it was done with a defter touch... it might've been an interesting film about obsession, ambition etc. But as it is it's a curious film that I wouldn't bother watching again.
One example is Andrew's relationship with Nicole. It was not given any real screen time to chart a rise and fall, so when Andrew breaks it off, it has little impact. You don't really care that much, since the relationship didn't seem to be much anyway. And it would've been more impactful had it been more visually depicted. Instead we just get Andrew blurting out that he wants to end it - this was not entirely unexpected, given the nature of this film, but it was a jarring plot misstep.
Andrew's relationship was a blip on the screen because in the end, he didn't really care that much for her. It had "little impact" on him.
