Tanner's End Game??

So at the Climax we see Tanner(Foster) taking on the police with his bronco and sniper in a deadly shootout. I was just wondering if anybody thought he had an end game where he could escape. From my point of view he knew it was the end for him and he was just going out in a blaze of glory(referenced earlier in the movie)

But then I got to thinking, why would he do this besides causing a distraction so Toby had a better chance to escape with the money(which was never part of their plan and typically wasn't in his character). It seemed to me he had some kind of plan that Toby wasn't aware of hence taking the heavy weapons which Toby protested. I suppose he may have just been a loose cannon doing well improvising and made it look like their was a plan. Even later Bridges' character states if he hadn't shot him he'd have a new truck pulling some jet skis. To me that came across as Bridges claiming if he hadn't acted and got behind him he would have gotten away.

The rattlesnake shown just after his death was a symbolic nod that that he was exactly where he was meant to be. That his death was inescapable.
Besides, he identified as a Comanche, “enemies forever,” and I think Tanner felt that he no longer had a place in this world, at least one that he was comfortable with.

Pointless.
The difference being rattlesnakes DO have a place in this world.
Thieving killers DON'T.
Really a stupid movie.
