The movie was always about the awkward boy not the dying girl ...

I was also a little pissed they killed her in the end but then I realised the movie was never really about her. She was just a device to tell his story.

Well, I don't quite agree with that. I mean, the movie was about the meaning and value of opening yourself up to friendship. The film delivered this message by having Greg be forced to befriend someone who he never would have otherwise.

But just because Rachel catalyses change in Greg doesn't mean you can boil her down to a plot device, at least IMO. Side characters cause changes in main characters all the time. It doesn't mean they aren't characters.

One thing I don't like is that the character keeps saying he's not handsome and looks like a dog etc etc. If they wanted the character to say that then they should have cast an actor with that description. He just seemed a normal guy

Clark: Jonathan Kent; isn't it a little past your bedtime?

being about the boy and not the dying girl is not something to be upset about.
It's unfair to the movie if you have an expectation for the plot and if it goes another direction you dislike it.

Well buddy, the title clearly implies that we'd be following the "me" around, aka Greg. It's not, "Greg, Earl and I'm dying."
