i just watched season#2 on blu-ray and in terms of acting, writing and
directing thought it was superior to season#1. so were the executives at
HBO on crack when they decided to cancel it?

They say ratings but HBO doesn't need to depend on ratings, since they don't sell ads. They have kept things on with low ratings (like GIRLS) for years. They've canceled shows (like VINYL) that had significantly higher ratings.
Personally, I think they didn't give it enough time to catch on, especially with an international audience. Their head of programming left HBO some months after the cancellation so it may have been a lack of vision in the absence of active leadership.
