Northern Ireland religious/political symbolism

Maybe I am reading too much into the film, but I wonder whether there was a bit of political/religious symbolism in the film relating to its setting in Northern Ireland, eg, the Bible being torn up; abortion; a fenced off compound with guards; masked gangs attacking people; and two 'sides' trying to share a small space with an uneasy peace between them, full of mutual suspicion.
