Question about the ending (spoilers)

OK, she came up to the camp, handed over the plantseeds en asked; what happens next?

what was that about?

Also; the girl on guard knew about her pregnancy. Why?

Was Milja send from this camp, together with (her mother?) to find seeds and get prgnant or something? I just dont get it.

reply

The guard said the residents would probably take a vote on whether to let her in the camp or not. The most likely reason the guard guessed that Mia was pregnant would be that it was a special camp set up to look after pregnant girls, or to get them impregnanted - a sort of baby farm. Mia had either been to the camp before or had been told about it. Your idea about being sent by the camp to get pregnant is an interesting one but if that was the case, her 'mother' would not have asked the Survivalist to practice coitus interruptus with her.

(I've mentioned on another thread that this ties in with a few other political/religious metaphors about Irish society. In the old days unmarried pregnant girls had to be taken in by convents to have their children, which were then put up for adoption).

aha, very interesting, very sharp. thnx ;)

Hughwm's response is absurd. There's nothing in the film to suggest any of that.

We can only assume that the camp at the end is a walled settlement where men and women are treated equally (the female guard, the one-armed woman sowing seeds) and where some form of democracy is used to decide things.

Any nonsense about a "baby farm" is going on in his head.

Good movie.

I laughed at the end for the shameless propaganda that humanitys only hope, no matter what happens, is democracy. The whole ending scene was a big cliche.

the plantseeds did not make sense either. have you seen the field, that they were harvesting? those plants will give them all the seeds in the world. a backback full of other seeds would not add anything of value.

Of course more seeds of different plants but also the same plants but different varieties adds value.

Recall the potato famine in Ireland? Diverse crops and seeds with different qualities are of great value in this world. Some seeds by seed companies are also hybrids that have attractive qualities but the seeds they produce will not be the same as the parent. The ones in the field could thus be of limited supply or the ones she had might be particularly vigorous even if they only last one cycle.

Voting is not necessarily democracy.

i think she stumbled upon it by accident.

she was obviously pregnant. large round belly, yet thin as hell.

a baby means new life, a continuation of the species, that's why they vote on letting her in, which would be a rather stupid decision. why let a potentially toxic stranger into their camp?

I wondered the same thing.. Did the whole survivalist plot involve the Mother/daughter getting admition to the "family loving farm project" by going out getting seeds as an price of admission..
I can't think of any reason why that could not have been the intent from the beginning... The Mother(if she is the mother) told him to deposit his deposit elsewhere though.. But maybe they had their own people they used for semination in the family farm... interesting idea and plot which is feasible I think...

i think it is obvious that a) she is not the mother and b) that the seed thing was simply ot of fear of having an additional mouth to feed.

There was no round belly, she is only 3 months along, I have known girls not to show until 7 months. The guard assumed she was also pregnant because of the way she was looking at the other babies and she just confirmed it when she said another 6 months she thinks before she gives birth.
