Japanese painting

I was thinking the same thing, the film looks a lot like watercolor or U-kiyo-e prints in motion. Takahata however has said his intention was that he wanted the film to be like a sketch rather than a cleaned up drawing.

It reminded me of one of those flip books where the image is a little bit different on every page and then it animates when you flip through it.
